Whites-Only Prom? Yikes

I think Vapor said it well.  If it were a black only prom no one would have noticed or if they did it would have made a foot note in a paper.  Not much is said when a minority uses a racist remark, but God forbid a white straight male says anything that is somewhat contraversial it makes headlines.  Guess what the Columbus Ledger Enquirer ran as its headline this morning?

In this theoretical situation of blacks organizing a "blacks-only" prom, it may be true that whites (in the south anyway) would not have any complaint.  That is because it supports their segregational beliefs.  Blacks-only and Whites-only proms are the same thing.  Both represent the goal of restoring a segregated, racist society.

The other stuff you mentioned about individuals making racist remarks is very different.  This is speech and thought, not action.  If you\'re saddened because you\'re not allowed to call a black person a "Spade" or some more offensive term right after he\'s call you a white honkey redneck cracker in front of a PA system at a national press conference, well you\'ll just have to think back on who enslaved whom, and get over it.  It\'s not reverse discrimination, and it\'s not action.  It\'s speech, and any inequalities are enforced by social mores, not federal law.  There\'s nothing you can do about it except accept it or whine about it.  Which would you prefer?

Actually you are right Vid, due to tribal warfare, vendettas, etc. blacks were sold by their own into slavery.  Europeans never ventured far inland to "round up" slaves.  In some rare cases blacks owned slaves here in the south as well.

So what you are saying is it is OK for blacks to be racist and white people should just take it.

I didn\'t say it was ok, I\'m saying that I don\'t whine about it.  When I\'m unemployed, I have little difficulty finding work again.  When I walk into a convenience store, the employees don\'t look at me like I\'m going to rob the place.  When I go to buy a car, the salesmen rush up to assist me, instead of ignoring me.  I\'m white, which means I have certain built-in advantages in this society.  Therefore I don\'t whine about little insignificant issues like blacks being able to call me names when I can\'t do the same in return.  I don\'t have any desire to say such things, but that\'s beside the point.
