Interview with the Vampire
« on: May 08, 2003, 12:16:30 PM »
Okay, my friend and I are having a debate about this movie.

He is dead set that the point of the movie is that Louis and Lestat are lovers.

Louis is a plantation owner with quite a bit of wealth and financial knowledge.  However he cared nothing for any of it.

Lestat saw the opportunity to take advantage of Louis\'s dispair by offering him a new take on life...becoming a vampire.  In the process Lestat would convince Louis that he is all Louis has.  That Lestat has all the answers and could teach him so much, in an attempt to keep him around.

What\'s not clear is whether they are lovers...they never have a physical encounter and never speak of any feelings toward each other.

Louis does make it clear that he despises Lestat for his ignorance and brutish manner.  I think the only thing keeping Louis around is the fear of being alone with something so new to himself.

When everything\'s gone to shit, Lestat makes a desperate attempt at keeping Louis around by converting a little girl, Claudia I think was her name.

I\'m really looking for your opinion if you\'ve seen the movie and read the book, but I\'ll take whatever you\'ve got.

Is your friend a homophobe? Just checkin to see if he has a serious opinion.

I don\'t believe it was anything sexual. Lestat just wanted an apprentice and companion- remember, they thought they were the only vampires left. Lestat was just evil, and I believe he wanted to corrupt Louis, he wanted him to be just like himself.

Well, thats what I think, but that was just from the movie, I\'m sure it gets much deeper in the book(which I wasn\'t even aware existed).

Me either...but he is convinced they were involved.  I think I shut him up though when I found a great little except from Anne Rice herself.

It went something along the lines of vampires transcend gender.  Then I also told him what happens between Lestat and Akasha in Queen of the Damned which completely blows away his theory that vampires are gay.

I\'ve read the book and I told him how much Louis despises Lestat from the very beginning but he won\'t listen to me.

He\'s just being stupid.

The characters of IWTV aren\'t gays disguised as vampires. They are us. They are us in our loneliness, in our fear, in our spiritual and moral isolation. They are us in our ruthlessness, and in our desperate quest for companionship, warmth, love and reassurance in a world full of gorgeous temptations and very real horrors. They are fallible beings with the power of gods; and that is exactly what we are, all of us.

In sum, INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE is bigger that a gay allegory, and so is almost any gay allegory.

Gender influences everything but determines nothing! Vampires transcend gender. We as a modern people transcend gender, though we can never escape it. Ours is a time for which there are no precedents with regard to gender and freedom. Look in vain to ancient Rome. Look in vain to the Middle Ages. There has never been so much affluence, scientific knowledge and so much common awareness of violence and injustice. There has never been so much real wealth for so many, combined with instantaneous media confrontation of poverty and suffering. Some of us see life as a horror story, but a horror story with great, great meaning.

I may be reading into it wrong, but it seems like vampires are above it all as far as Anne Rice is concerned.  They are neither gay or straight, they just are.

Anne Rice\'s Vampires are bi (or gay). Not that there\'s anything wrong with that. :)

being an ann rice fan myself I have read most of the books from the vampire chronicles and its true vampires do not have genders once they become the undead they leave gender behind in some of Ann Rice\'s books they do describe two male vampire lovers such as armand if you read the book the vampire Armand by Ann Rice he is involved with several men sexualy and emotionaly and this was even befor he was a vampire.  The vampire Marius is the start of all this and he loved both pandora, lesate and Armand when you read her books you have to keep in mine thta they describe a society that does not really exsist how a real vampire would act we will never know truely but she potrays them as wanderibg souls, alone by force not by choice unable to feel love or lust but she decribes something similar to it a new feeling that only vampires feel.  Oddly enough I have never seen the movie but I have read the book and as far as the books go they were like super hero and sidekick
