Computer problems...
« on: May 25, 2003, 09:13:22 PM »
As of lately my computer has been very glitchy, sluggish, slow, irritable, and just plain "odd".

For example; on rare occasions I play Starcraft, now when sign on, create game, or join game it freezes, without the mouse moving, and nothing responds. I let it be instead of restarting- and in about 3 minutes its back to normal.

Another thing; when I change the desktop ( I do this just about every 3 days just for a change of scenery ) it just doesnt look right, their are lines going horizontally across it of a navy blue color, and it looks really pale...

Alot of my progams have been really slow, and occasionally my sound doesnt turn on, so I have to open the sound thing up, turn it full blast, then right-click to make a noise. Its the only way to get it on.

Please help, Ive run virus scans (And continue to every night) and only have a few programs running. Help with this pleaaaaaase- its a pain in the ass waiting 1 minute for My Documents to open.

No one will be able to provide any useful suggestions until you post more specifics about your PC.  What brand/model, hardware, what operating system, and what unusual software are you running?

This should have occured to you.

Things to try
Defragging first. May help stop the sluggish problem. Scan your harddisk for sector errors..   Scan for AD-WARE and remove it.
Update Drivers for everything.
If still have problems, reinstall Everything including windows. Nothing like a fresh install every once and awhile.

If you still have problems after a reinstall, Some of your hardware could be dieing, Harddrive, CPU, Mem or Motherboard would be my guess.  Could be any of those.  Read through all of this first before doing anything.

Firstly change your IDE cables. (Say you have 2 ide cables) Remove your cdrom ide cable (Ide cable number 2) and put it in your hd. Then boot and see how the machine runs. Test both IDE ports and switch both cables between your HD and Cdrom/s. So test cable number 1 on your hd. Without ide cable 2 being plugged in your cdroms. Then as i said above etc. If you have any trouble with any of the cables, replace them. If you have trouble with both. Test all your IDE ports on your motherboard the same way. 1 port at a time, I\'ve seen LOTS of pcs have many problems simply because of old ide cables. Try changing them.

If you have more then 1 memory stick. (say u had 2) take 1 of them out. (slot2) Run the machine. If all seems normal, take out the stick that’s left in your motherboard (slot1)  and put it where the other one used to sit. (slot2) If all still is normal, your mem stick that you removed is dead. (slot2 stick) Try this on all your sticks.  If you have no troubles with either stick in slot 1, but troubles in your other one/s then your mobo is dieing.
If you have a old cpu that would suit the mobo, try testing that. If all works ok, your cpu is dieing. If not, again your mobo is dieing. You will see a improvement even if you put in a old cpu.

If all fails, rip out EVERYTHING but your CPU, Mem and vidcard. Put everything back in 1 by 1 and boot everytime. That will also help you source out the problem.

That\'s all i can think off.
