No more IE? Thoughts

"Q: when / will there be the next version of IE?

A: As part of the OS, IE will continue to evolve, but there will be no future standalone installations. IE6 SP1 is the final standalone installation."

From a web developers standpoint this statement worries me a tad.

Apprently MS believes that updating browsers is important since no one is going to embrace new technology unless IE supports it (it is the defacto standard nowdays).

The problem though is that unless everyone switches their browser web developers are forced to use outdated technology until MS updates its OS (the next OS update is in 2005).  IE6 is already overdue for an update.  Any hope there was of seeing an IE7 with better support for standards has now evaporated.

Now don\'t get me wrong, I\'m no anti-MS, open-source freak but I am not happy about this at all.  I have firmly believed for a while now that bundling of IE with Windows has effectively killed off browser competition on the Windows platform.

I\'m interested in seeing what other people think of this, especially other web developers.

The standard is w3c.
IE does not follow it.
I use mozilla.

When he says "standard" he means web developer standard. More consumers have IE than any other browser so more developers make websites compatible with IE.

Most web developers make their websites compatible with as many browsers as possible.

A good way to do this is by running your html through the w3c validator page which ensures your site will be viewed properly on any client conforming to the standard.

I personally have two WinDoze PC\'s and I have an Apple. I use my Apple all the time. It\'s good hardware and OS X runs perfect. Not to mention, you get the best of all worlds. Want *Nix applications? Run XDarwin. Want OS X interface and applications? Just run OS X. Want Windoze applications? Throw Windows on it via Virtual PC.

The only downside to the Mac is limited upgrades and that is mostly the iMac. If you go and get yourself a PowerPC you\'re perfectly set

I\'d really love to get an Apple but I don\'t have much money, it\'s not worth getting one now just so I can thumb my nose at Microsoft.  The hours i\'ve spent playing with a friends apple have really changed my perception of them, i\'m quite fond of them now.

What system does he have and what OS is he runnin\'? OS X is actually a very stable and functional OS.  I love runnin\' \'uptime\' in Terminal just to see how long my OS has been up. Something I never done with Windows.

I use netscape or mozilla myself. So it doesn\'t really bother me. Only time i use IE is to update windows or to test pages i\'ve made for websites etc.

Good riddens to IE for OS X. Out of all the browsers I have tried (I.E, Camino , Safari, Mozilla and Netscape) I.E is the slowest and buggiest browser out there. Not to mention, MS has really yet to take any strides in updating the damn thing.

IE has became out dated when compared with the other browsers , yet it still holds over 95 precent of the browser market. Now, there is something wrong with that.
