ipods have a builtin battery, which will at some point die out leaving u with an expensive pile of usless hardware, this is the only reason stopping me from getting one other wise i see no better way for spending 550$.

pS- Audiophiles don\'t use compression.

Yes they do.

You need to keep in mind that #1 there is no clear definition as to waht makes one an audiophile(long story)

#2 many people I know whom own $20,000 systems still like to use portable cd players/mp3-hard drive)(with separate mini headphone amp)

#3 alot of people choose to  use there computer as a medium to stream-out  audio to there a reciver, as comression allows them to store thousands of song on there HDD, rather than having to insert a cd for every song. Now you might ask why stream from the computer when CD\'s possses higher quality sound, the answer is simple: In my personal and professional opinion, unless you own expensive audio gear-above strarting at around the $3000 mark then a properly ripped wav-converted to quality 8 mp3-Ogg will not have any difference to the ear than the wav. Alot of times the Placebo effect is the audiophiles worst enemy.

They largest blind study done(year 2000) by Harvard I believe, took somewhere near 5,000 so-called audiophiles, ripped the music(with the best possible program/settings(might hAVE been EAC) encoded in MP3 256kbits and the majority of them could not tell the difference between the CD and mp3. You see they never were told which was which. That\'s why I strongly believe in Blind studys, as the mind can no longer play tricks on you.

Audiophiles are unoffically considered audiophiles if they spend around $75-$100+ grand on the audio side of their system alone.  I am one of those people that have an HTPC and use it for almost everything, including music.  I just consider myself an enthusiast but I can tell the difference between MP3 and redbook.  It\'s not in my mind it\'s blatantly obvious even on my meager setup.  The line does get thinner at 256kbps+ LAME but an mp3 is still just an mp3.  44.1kHz/16-bit redbook is already an aging format.. why make it worse?  If it\'s for the sake of convenience then that person isn\'t exactly an audiophile... they always put audio quality over convenience.  Hence turntables costing more than your car.

And when I back up my CDs it\'s always to raw Wavforms, many do the same thing.

u can recharge them but u cant replace them coz their inbuilt, and as we all know rechargable batteries die out after long term use or excessive recharging or over charging.

I\'ve had a minidisc player for 6 years and it hasn\'t died out yet but then again, I haven\'t used it much in the last two years. In fact I\'ve never heard of anyone who have had a device where the batteries have died out, mainly coz they\'ve all replaced it with newer gadgets after 4-6 years. If I buy an IPod I don\'t plan on using it in 6 years time, as there would be a much better product out there by then for sure. But hey, that\'s just me.
