Get the least expensive DV (firewire) card you can get. Then transfer the video (it\'s just digital data stored on the tape).

Or use any existing firewire input you might have.

This is a firewire socket, my pc has 4 of them!!

It\'s dead easy to copy miniDV with this, it just tranfers straight across providing you have some decent editing software also. I have premiere 6.5.

so, you don\'t need a capture card?

so basically you hook it up to one of those babies, use the right software and upload to ur PC?

All I want to do is make screen caps... This might also be another stupid question but what megapixel/res rate would my mini dv be at?

its a Sony DCR TVR11E, was damn expensive two years ago, dont know how good it is by todays standards though...

EDIT - Ok, after opening my eyes just a little wider i have discovered i have one firewire thingo on the front of my computer along with what looks like two usb ports and maybe that i link thingo.

so how do i hook it up?

If you have the firewire socket then all you need is a firewire cable to connect camcorder to the computer.

There are no drivers to install, windows should pick up the camcorder automatically. All capturing/editing is then done via software (Adobe premiere 6.5 in my case). This software is fairly advanced though.
A more basic capturing/editing program to use is Windows movie maker. My computer came with this pre-installed so I\'m not sure if it is built into XP or not.
