Hi, I have a problem with the divX codec.. Whenever I try to play my home made DivX files (no not movies :p) the picture freezes but the audio continues to play.

I know its not a problem with the files themselves because they used to play fine before, and I know other people can play them.

I think it has something to do with Doctor ****tard aka Doctor DivX which I downloaded off http://www.divx.com, when I had it installed it would ask me to purchase the damn thing before encoding anything.

After I managed to delete it and installing NiroCodecPack I could encode fine, but now playback wont work.

Any ideas?
I think I used DivX 5.02 when encoding them.. DivX 4.12 seems to work fine.

PS: DivX movies work fine, so its a weird problem.

If you only want to playback you only really need the ffdshow filter but I\'m guessing you\'re gonna be encoding some more in the future so here\'s what I think:

You mean Nimo codec pack? In that case uninstall that POS ASAP... After that I would suggest installing the latest xvid and divx codecs individually and not use the codec packs as they install a lot of crap you don\'t need and often **** up your system. At least do custom install of codec packs and only choose the stuff you need.

Get teh Divx pack that includes Divx Player 2.0 alpha. That will read your movies without freezing.

I\'ve tried most of the players listed on http://www.divx-digest.com and the best player to play divx/xvid, and all other video media for that matter, with is definitely zoomplayer IMHO.

I don\'t see it being a player specific problem though. I suspect that it\'s a codec conflict of some sort...

I do these all the time.  You *should* be using the latest Divx 5.1 Pro codec.  This codec kicks ass.  If you want the Pro it costs about $20 (worth it imo) or you can take the spyware version which is f*cked.  The basic one is free and contains no spyware but obviously very basic with options and maybe a lil buggy to get you to buy the Pro version.

If the video freezes it most likely is because the bitrate is too low.  Try either:

- 800 kbps 1-pass for 320x240
- 750 for multipass of the same size (have to encode at least TWICE!!, 1st is multipass- 1st pass, then nth pass)

1-pass is the most stable, and try using Virtual Dub rather than that Dr. Divx crap, it\'s just a big waste of money!

Once you get the jist of it all it becomes a piece of cake, I love posting videos online and my accounts are small so compressing it just right has always been a hobby of mine.

Some free alternatives:
http://www.xvid.org - actually a tad better than Divx but much more complex.
Windows Media Encoder - .WMV files.  Very good quality.

Thanks all of you..

I tried converting the files in VirtualDub to "DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion" and they work fine now.
Ill try and "find" DivX 5.1 Pro btw ;P
