BTW why is Abandonware not allowed? I thought Copyright only lasted for as long as the product is available?

Abandonware is not warez. Abandonware is perfectly legal from what I\'ve heard.

Abandonware IS NOT legal. Just because the product is not sold anymore, doesn\'t mean the creators loose their copyright. So linking to abandonware is like linking to warez as far as this site goes.

Actually Samwise I thought there was nothing wrong with it as well.  You couldn\'t buy POP 1 even if you wanted to.  If it wasn\'t legal then these abandon ware sites would be shut down.  They have been up for years.

Jeez you people... abandonware = NOT legal, STILL copyrighted, not sold products. I don\'t care if they\'re not sold, dl\'ing them is illegal = warez = not suitable for this site.

Yeah, I like being a byatch. ;)

But really, let\'s take it one more time... ABANDONWARE = ILLEGAL.

If it\'s legal or not depends. There are abandonware sites that offer LEGAL abandonware downloads with games that have been released for legal free distribution as a free download, freeware, public domain or some similar distributing method. The latest game to do so is Hidden & Dangerous Deluxe which can be downloaded from a popular gaming site.

Yeah, then it\'s different. But if the creators have not released their products for free distribtíon (and that would be most games and apps, no matter the age) then it\'s still not legal.

I agree with you on that one, I just wanted to say that abandonware in the true sense of the word doesn\'t automatically mean illegal warez.

So Samwise, do you have any sources to back up your claims that Abandonware really is illegal?

Just asking.

I thought all abandonware was legal, given up by the companies for free distribution. Oh well, if anyone want to d/l it just do a search of abandonware in google and you will find a site with it easy enough.

*slaps forehead*

Doh.

Ok, here goes. Taken from the very site Kurt Angle linked to:

"Is abandonware legal?
No it isn\'t, don\'t let anyone tell you otherwise."

Here\'s from another abandonware site:

"Is Abandonware legal?:
er..... no, it\'s not. many reckon it should be, and some of the thicker webmasters even claim it is, legal. but there\'s no two ways about it, downloading abandonware is illegal, as it putting it up on a site."

Come on, if you need more proof (besides using your head and common sense), then research it yourself.

Alright, it just sounded that way to me. At least you can be sure now.
