Help me understand something.
« on: November 10, 2003, 11:25:58 AM »
I\'ve never really looked in to philosophy as I\'ve never really had an interest.  I don\'t have the mind for it, I\'m much better at just doing what I do...not worrying why I do it.

Anyway, I went reading through some articles and must say it\'s very fascinating.  Some of it a bit over my head but interesting to say the least.

I just put this together, tell me if it makes sense.

Quote
There is everything and there is nothing. Both derive meaning from each other, thus one can not exists without the other.

Chaos is everything that is nothing, it is from order that chaos exists thus creating a need for balance. Without balance everything returns to chaos(non-existence).

Something about it just isn\'t sitting right.

It\'s simple. Yin and Yang. :)

^That doesn\'t help.  If it were simple I wouldn\'t have made this thread.

I\'ll have to do some reading on Yin and Yang.

Oh, okay.  At least I know what to go looking for to help me understand it.

Thank you.  So what I posted is correct as far as Taoism goes?

Oh absolutely. If you ever meet a Taoist, remember, it\'s not a religion. Think of it as a philosophy in which people live by.

the idea is that you can\'t have one extreme with out the other, as one helps define the other.  Here\'s an example, if you didn\'t have dumb people, than smart people wouldn\'t be any different from the rest, thus they wouldn\'t be deffined as smart, but as normal.

Is that what you were asking?

*edit, reread your post and I thought you were asking for an explanaition of the statement, so disregard this post.

I think it means nothing and soemthing don\'t exist. Nothing is only created when you decide you have something... without something, there is no nothing... there just simply is....

Order creates chaos..... because without order, chaos wouldn\'t be chaos... get it?
atleast thats what i thought. im probley way off.

edit: yeah im with omen and unicorn on this one, i should read the whole thread first next time :P

It took me two hours to put that together for myself, like I said I never really thought about it.  It started out as half a page then I broke it down the more I thought about it.  I was just making sure my logic wasn\'t flawed...

Now I\'m wondering what all exists between everything and nothing.  It\'s all just a state of matter and anti-matter, some of which we could never understand while in our current conscious state of being?

I need to go lie down before I hurt myself:confused:

I really hate philosophy to be honest, im not saying dont like it, i just have enough trouble doing this wothout worrying about ever single little consequence and bever getting a real answer for anything becasue everyones views about everything are so different - which is a good thing though =]

"there is no spoon."

The reality we live is bound or governed by perception...perhaps not our own?

OR

Is it perception is governed by the reality you live?

Think of a fish in a pond.  That fish knows nothing more than the pond.  It can swim up and down within the parameters of that pond without any knowledge of what lies beyond it...it can\'t see beyond the pond nor does it need to(purpose) so it is limited by it\'s own perception needed to exists?

Hmm...kinda went around full circle there.

Yes of course we can only understand what we can preceive.

We as humans study what we know, and we can only know what we as a specieis can know. If we learn something, it is because we were created with the ability to learn it... but what can\'t we know? ... as a species we do not know where our scientific abilities end, we are still studying space and dimensions etc....

In conclusion, theoretically we will eventualy be limited by the laws of the dimension we live in. But, if at any point we find a way to surpass these limitations, they were not limitations in the first place.... So perhaps that means we are never limited at all? perhaps...

So, if we do find our limitations, will we even know it? :O

perhaps like fish, our mental ability only reaches so far. Perhaps there is a level far beyond what we understand....

DUNDUNDUN!!!
