Yes, another "ism" thread...
« on: November 18, 2003, 04:49:30 PM »
Today at school a monk from Tibet came and spoke.

I skipped 2 of my classes (2 hours, 30 minutes total) to listen to his speeches, he cant speak english but a translater translated.

His name is Palden Gyatso, and is an amazing man. He is buddhist, and has been a monk for some time.

The paper did an article on him, if you care to read it.

He was in prison most of his life, 33 years I believe, for peaceful protests. He was forced to eat leather shoes, bugs, grass, and bugs for that time.

Its terrible what is going on in that part of the world, and how much it is being ignored.

Quote
During his 33 years as a prisoner of conscience in Chinese labors camps and prisons in Tibet, Tibetan lama Palden Gyatso was dangled over fire as if he was a human steak. He was routinely kicked and whipped while pulling a plow for more than nine hours a day. He had an electrical cattle prod shoved down his mouth, shocking and destroying all the roots of his teeth.

He showed us his false teeth and was almost crying in memory. I cannot imagine how much he was going through.

And yet, he holds no hate or disregard or any grudge for them, because anger is a buddhist enemy.

I just figured since we were talking, and still am talking about Taoism etc. I should bring this up: it seemed to fit.

BTW: I beat up both those kids when they were in 8th grade, :( :D

BTW: If you are going to post in here, make it serious, its not a laughing matter and hopefully an intellectual discussion can happen sometime on this forum.

I think he had to eat bugs once or twice. Not sure if that was mentioned or not, Luke.

I think so. The article isn\'t really clear on that, nor is Spudz, so it\'s hard to say.

You know what, out of all the religions in the world Buddhist, Tao(ist?), and Hindu have to be the most understanding peaceful religions. Christianity "believes" in peace. But GWB did go to war and asked God to bless the soldiers and help them...kill other people? Then there are the Crusades, terrible times. I\'ve been learning alot about Jews and I understand why they would not accept Jesus as their Messiah. In some respect their right. But anyways, yeah it\'s really sad that he was mistreated that way but it\'s cool to see that he actually sticks to his believes, he might be shattered on the outside, but I bet on the inside he is the most peaceful complete people there are.
Don\'t try to confuse me with what you call  facts, my mind is already made up.

True. I mean, when you consider its prequel, \'The Temple of Doom\' , then I think \'The Last Crusade\' is actually a really good finishing film for the trilogy.

Well, I can say it\'s pretty upsetting to read this part too.

There was so much Chinese propaganda that the Chinese, whenever there was an important visitor, would warn that everyone in the prison had to laugh," Gyatso said. "They would bring in their own people wearing uniforms like prisoners. They would have the refrigerators full of wonderful food and everyone would be playing games and dancing."

Why did I ruin it? Just showing Spudz what it\'s like when someone wants to have a serious topic and it\'s spammed. Alittle taste of his own medicine, so to speak.

And I have to agree with Gohan. There is terrible stuff goin\' on in our homeland that is being ignored and frankly I\'m more worried about that, than the people in Tibet, who I\'ll never see and will always remain faceless other than those stupid Sally Struthers face the starving children commercials.
