m$ has server and bandwidth cost?  bullshit, they run a "matching service" is all they do.  and you suckers pay for it

your not actully playing on any m$ server, its call point to point networking and my PS2 does it for free

ooseven- What PC games have you played recently?  ALL the good ones require 10-25 people to play at the same time.  There\'s no way to set those up for free, that\'s just the way it is.  Clans are kind enough to pay for public servers to allow everyone to come in and play a game.

mm- Have you tried both services?  I haven\'t but people who have say Xbox online is MUCH more user-friendly and super smooth.  They say they can\'t imagine going back to finnicky PS2 online, even if they\'re favorite game is on it.

No bias here as I actually love my PS2 more, just saying Xbox is clearly the winner if you wish to play online.  The same \'ol rule applies here: you get what you pay for.

I mainly pay FPS... but i have been known to play strategy games like HOMEWOLRD 2 and the link on line....

For Free....Heck even some of the Clan run servers (or Hots for clans) are 100% free.

so please... just because i am sensible not to pay and play on Clan servers don\'t make my point of view in valid.


So if you want to continue to pay to play with X box live ... so be it

its your money.

i Just want you to know that FREE online PC gaming is the majority and notthe minorty.

heh, I was saying it\'s not free.  Just because YOU don\'t pay doesn\'t mean it\'s 100% free, the money has to come from somewhere.  99% of all FPS servers are clan hosted, game players like you and I.

The infrastructure is different but the fact remains the same; nothing\'s free.  You can\'t host clan based servers for Xbox games but if you could it would be a lot smoother than it is now.

clan hosted?  wtf are you talking about?

i dont pay squat to play q3, UT, CS or any other fps out there, there are 1000\'s and 1000\'s of servers to play on

hell, if i had a little less respect for dev\'s, i could download all of the above and play for free all i wanted

The Xbox live central-server system definitely has it\'s pros and cons... but I think (even though I don\'t own one), that the pros are huge.  Being able to get invitations to join a game when a friend logs on?  Downloading other people\'s "best times" and such in racing games, so you can ghost them?  All that stuff is sweet.  The only con side is really the money... which in most people\'s cases is enough to make them look elsewhere.

When you join a server what\'s the name of it?  The thousands I see on Gamespy are owned be clans such as -=LnL=- Lock \'n Load, =BH= Blackhats, -d|b|g-, [EASY] Company, etc....  These are clans that pay for the server.

These companies host the servers.  It ain\'t free, never has been never will be.

Hehe, mm you\'re missing the point. Sure, YOU don\'t have to pay to play. But someone (other players) have to pay for those \'free\' servers to run. So you\'re both right.

there\'s 2 dozens servers hosted at the university 10 miles from me alone

you know why clans have pay to play servers?  cause they want privacy.

running a quake 3 server is profitable, hence the suckers paying to play on it

I can see you were never in a clan. :)  Most all gaming servers are public.  We had 3 servers at one point, all were setup for public slots.  They were only made pass-protected private during practices and matches which were once a week or less, no more than an hour.  Just about all ladders operate with this plan.  Call us suckers if you wish but renting professionally-run gaming servers is a helluva lot of fun and very efficient.  Our clan made it to the #1 spot twice, which wouldn\'t have been possible using a university server.

If you want to provide a nice ping and great service you\'re gonna have to pay for it.  If you want to play on a server with a nice ping you better hope there are clans shelling out the dough to setup gaming servers.

i was in several clans, ask jaym

i didnt pay a damn cent, nor did anyone else in my clans, and my pings were < 50 at all times

email the operator and ask for rcon, easy enough
