Participant at KKK initiation wounded after shots fired into sky

Monday, November 24, 2003 Posted: 2:31 PM EST (1931 GMT)JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee (AP) -- A bullet fired in the air during a Ku Klux Klan initiation ceremony came down and struck a participant in the head, critically injuring him, authorities said.

Gregory Allen Freeman, 45, was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment in the Saturday night incident that wounded Jeffery S. Murr, 24.

About 10 people, including two children, had gathered for the ceremony. The man who was being initiated was blindfolded, tied with a noose to a tree and shot with paintball guns as Freeman fired a pistol in the air to provide the sound of real gunfire, Sheriff Fred Phillips said.

A bullet struck Murr on the top of the head and exited at the bottom of his skull, authorities said.

Freeman fled the ceremony but was arrested near his home, authorities said. He was released on $7,500 bail.

Sounds like God was trying to tell them something.  They should take the hint.

However, I don\'t understand how this can happen.  If you\'re firing up into the air, at an angle which would permit the bullet to come straight back down, wouldn\'t the slug exhaust it\'s energy and just fall back to earth under gravitational force only?  I understand it could injure someone at that speed, but would it pass entirely through a human head?  I can\'t imagine that.

Maybe there were snipers hidden in the trees?  :surprised

If I recall my physics class correctly, the speed of the bullet coming back down is fast enough to crack your skull and pentrate. This sort of accident is common during New Year\'s Eve celebrations in Cape Town and Los Angeles (oddly enough).

It would be true, it would just keep increasing in speed until something stopped it, whether that\'s a concrete pavement, or someones head.

That whole penny from the top of the tower thing, it isn\'t true that it could kill somebody. I saw this documentary once that the wind resistance would actually slow down the penny, and couldn\'t actually crack somebodys skull...I can\'t really explain it that well, but, unless the History Channel has lied to me, I\'m pretty certain that it isn\'t true.

they did it on myth busters, the conclusion is that it would barely hurt.  As for the bullet, it could only reach terminal velocity
V=sqrt (2x weight/drag coefficient * density * frontal area) frontal area=weight-density/mass

a .30 cal bulltet\'s terminal velocity is about 200mph
