20,000 deads
« on: December 26, 2003, 03:22:31 PM »
It\'s incredible, but news spent today more time on the mad cow of USA and the rains over California than on the earthquake in south Iran, where there are officialy, and, for the moment, more than 20,000 deads.

The city of Bam, with 180,000 inhabitants is totally destroyed, even its great fortress, one of Iran\'s jewels. 60% of homes have collapsed in this city.

The eathquake, 6,3 in Richer Scale, lasted 30 seconds. The one of California, with 6,5, only killed 2 people.

Anyway, humans\' lifes are not worth the same in every part of the world. If this happens in UK or USA, we would have special programmes, Breaking News Specials, and the same video running for about 2 months.
Todas estas cosas se perderán en el tiempo como lágrimas en la lluvia.

Agreed..

A "funny" thing I noticed on TV4\'s Text-TV was, when the power failure happened in the US, TV4\'s Front page had a flashing "EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA" sign, but when this happened in Iran nothing of that sort.

SVT is better though.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that TV4 even had a extra newscast when the power failure happened.

It\'s not being completely overlooked.  You have to remember most broadcast stations are run by the Americans and right now Iran and the U.S. aren\'t best of friends.

Besides USA is the only country that matters. ;)

Hmmm, let me think of what affects me.  The power outage bothers me more than 20,000 deaths on the other side of the globe.

Who is this anamoly we call Jumpman? How is he able to do what he does and still survive after years of torment? It seems he feeds on the hate, growing with an intense passion to put unassuming members in their place.

In what way did I say screw em\'???
It\'s just what I need to know versus what is sad.  I don\'t need to know in a "hey hey hey" fashion that 20,000 people died.

I was simply reflecting on the general attitude by overexagerating the lack of care.

Some people just don\'t know how to handle things like this.  Until somehow puts a relation involving themselves they just don\'t realize how big the number 20,000 is.  Hell, thats almost the entire suburb I live in.

It\'s sad that general americans\' attitude use to coincide with yours. You and only you.

Yeah really.  God is fake anyway, so he could be any color...

Wasn\'t there a bigger earthquake in California and no one died?

SOunds like someone needs to look into the Iranian building inspectors.  ;)

Yea, because the city was not made to withstand suck an earthquake most of the city was destroyed and it wiped out 1/4 the population.

The thing about Bam (other then the now tragically appropriate name) is, those buildings have been around for, 2000 years or so. While the oldest buildings in California have been around maybe 300. Given the construction of the buildings, it is a wonder that they survived for so long. It also means that the area isn\'t as earthquake prone as California.

Still, with the billions Iran is getting from oil sales, you would think they would fund ways to reinforce the buildings. You know, help the people? Why I\'m glad I live in a free nation instead of mad fundamentalist mullahs.

As for should we care? Yes and no. There are many people suffering in the world. I\'m not going to stop my life because some millions of people are dying because of hunger, or in this case, 20,000 dead from a natural disaster (even heard the numbers could be as high as 40,000  ). However, that doesn\'t make this event any more tragic. That doesn\'t mean, that no one should help them. Many nations are helping Iran with the rescure and recovery effort (even Israel and the US. Both who are enemies of Iran [at least the government of Iran]). Just that, no one here should lose too much sleep over it either.
