Would you risk?
« on: January 01, 2004, 04:56:58 AM »
I want to purchase a digital still camera for so long that I cannot remember. When I\'ve some money saved, an urgency appears and I have to spend it. I want a SLR (Single Lens Reflex) and my first candidate is Canon EOS 300D, also known as Canon Digital Rebel in some parts of the globe, with 6.3 effective pixels resolution. The problem is... erm... the price? Yep. At the moment, the retail pack with lens in Spain is about €1300 (ouch!), but I know that in USA this same pack is around $900.

What happens? Well, as you know, euro is taking advantage of dollard and nowadays €=1.26$, which means that if I buy the camera in the states for 900 dollars, it will cost me here €714... €600 SAVED!!! Of course I would add the shipping cost and some extra mem card ;) Anyway, I think it\'s a good deal.

But there is a problem, a risk. What happens if the camera is wrong? What happens if the camera doesn\'t work properly? The shipping would cost me a lot, I mean to pay the transport Spa-Usa Usa-Spa, you know. Ans what if the warranty down\'t cover international sales? Erm... that\'s a problem. Would you risk? Would you do this operation taking into account that you\'re saving more than €600 ($755)? I want advices.

BTW, what would be the best online store to buy at in USA? I don\'t mean the cheapest, but the most trustly - quality shop.

Here is the babe:

Nice camera.

Up to 1600 ISO. That\'s damned good with the right lens coz you could take pics of bar bands without using a flash.

2 people at my edit house have the camera.  Pretty darn nice for the price.  I like the Nikon 6.2 myself.  It has a larger CCD.

I think it\'s going to be a few months though till I can afford one..

That\'s a reasonable explanation. Seed Of Evil the name of your son\'s little league soccer team? ;)

I have no opinion on what to do, but I gotta say that that\'s one of the coolest looking cameras I\'ve ever seen.

Stylish, and it appears to have a sturdy construct.

I am a Canon whore and have been since I began owning cameras long long ago.  The 300D is a very interesting camera that is selling hot right now due mostly to the price point.  I considered it, but decided against it.  The 300D lacks many features that my 35mm Elan IIe and most other EOS SLRs have had for years.  I know that Canon needed to eliminate features and dumb it down to position the product below their better 10D and 1D, however the price is too high for me to use this camera as a substitute for the Elan.  Here are a few things I didn\'t like about it:

  • The 1.6 focal length multiplier created by the CCD is frustrating when using existing Canon EF lenses.
  • No manually selectable AF mode, no separately selectable metering mode.  Metering is always "evaluative" or "partial" with the AE lock button activated.  Centerweighted average is only available in full manual mode.
  • You can\'t customize the button assignments as much as you can in other typical Canon EOS cameras.  In fact, there are no custom function settings at all.
  • No mirror lockup for bulb exposures.
  • No second curtain flash sync mode.

I am now preparing to purchase a Canon powershot G5 instead, and continue to use the Elan IIe for all serious photography with my EF lense collection.  I imagine that in the next 3-4 years, Canon will introduce another digital SLR model that should eliminate the 1.6 multiplier problem, and will probably offer more features at a lower price than the 300D.  Until then, the G5 will be a much more compact solution for casual photos.  If you need a digital SLR, I would recommend you save more money and go with the 10D instead.

By the way, if you buy your US market camera from a dealer in the United States, the warranty will not be valid in Europe.  Of course if you know someone here, you could always ship it back to them and have them submit the camera for warranty service if needed.  The savings might justify such inconveniences.

Canon cameras are awesome, it\'s just a matter of selecting the right one.  Canon EX flashes are amazing too.  E-TTL is awesome, and once you start using it, you\'ll never be satisfied with the primitive flashes on most point-and-shoot cameras.

I\'m with you Cored except in your decision of buying a G5 instead of 300D, you crazy? For 200$ more you get the SLR, nothing to do with G5. Food for thought.

I know the EOS 300D is a little under the features of a current analog SLR camera. But, as you said, it was necessary to introduce the digital technology in SLRs under 1000$. I think it\'s a superb camera, with a superb quality (go and see some of the reviews\' galleries). Yep, 10D is way better, more proffesional, but also more expensive. If I had money enough to spend, I\'d go for the Kodak 40 (cannot remember the exact model name) with 22MB but I cannot. I think this is a good purchase for enter in the digital image world.

If I get it and need some accesories, could I ask you since you\'re into photography?
