Some good mp4 encoders?
« on: January 18, 2004, 03:06:17 AM »
My new phone I am getting plays mp3 and mp4 files (AAC).

mp4 supposedly gives very good quality at a lower file size, but I am not convinced. I have been using NERO and so far results are varied. I dunno, there just doesn\'t seem to be that much diff in file size unless you go down to like 96kbps and then the quality ain\'t that great.

are there any better encoders out there or am i just wasting my time. maybe i should just stick with mp3s....

I\'d stick with tried and true LAME encoded mp3s @ 192kbps VBR or above.  If you need the space and encode to 128kbps, definitely use AAC as it sounds much better than mp3 at that bitrate.

Apple iTunes has an AAC encoder built in.

^^

But a 128kbps mp4 compared with a 128kbps mp3 are pretty much so the same file size. So what your saying in a 128 mp4 is better quality then the same as mp3?

I tried to compare them but they sounded the same.

I noticed a big difference.  AAC seems to virtually drown out any of that "wishy-washy" sound mp3s exhibit at 128.  Personally if I was stuck at that bitrate mp3 wouldn\'t be a choice.

It\'s all up to you though since you\'re using it.  If you don\'t hear a difference on good quality headphones more power to you.

I personally encode everything at 320kbps - J-Stereo - Samplerate 48000.  And it sounds great. :)
