New Gran Turismo 4 Cockpits Hitting Japan!

Looks sweet as hell!

For the racing fan who has everything, peripheral manufacturer Logicool -- the Japanese arm of American company Logitech -- today announced a new cockpit for Sony\'s upcoming racing simulation Gran Turismo 4.
Produced in conjunction with racing seat manufacturer Sparco, it features a remarkably reduced price in comparison to previous Logicool cockpits, which is fairly frightening considering how much it costs nonetheless.

The new "Sparco Racing Cockpit Pro" is a tubular framework designed to house a GT-badged Sparco "Speed" sporting seat and the new PlayStation 2 GT Force Pro wheel. The positions of the seat, wheel, and pedals are adjustable for the optimum driving position, and it comes with a set of floor mats to keep the corners from marking up a wood, linoleum, or tatami floor.




All this comes at a price, of course -- Logicool plans to sell the cockpit through its website for 73,290 yen (almost $700), and the wheel is sold separately. The cockpit is only compatible with the new wheel, so Gran Turismo 3 veterans can\'t use their original GT Force wheels with the new cockpits. Remarkably, the new model is still less expensive than last December\'s "Sparco Racing Cockpit Pro Fighter Model," which featured a pricier Sparco seat at a markup of more than $250.

The mose dedicated of Japanese Gran Turismo fiends will of course damn the cost and line up anyway when Logicool opens pre-orders on May 7. Those with more money than patience can also pick up some of the remaining Fighter models on March 29. The rest of us, meanwhile, can simply sit tight for more news of Gran Turismo 4 during the long wait for its fall release.

I can make my own. But I have no space and I do have a real car I sometimes compete in.

I would have to be hella rich before I would buy something like that.  I wonder how much you could build your own cockpit for... I mean, the main cost would be the seat... and you could do the frame/tubing yourself.  That would be an interesting project to make.

Someone at the Subie board built their own. They rigged the PS2 Dual Shock 2 controller to a set of hydraulics for the rumble affect. The guy is in college with pals helping him out. Whiz kids with time can build anything.
