New Hood/ Body Shop Nightmare
« on: April 23, 2004, 04:16:09 AM »
So I get the call to pick up my car. Great! The paint job is done and now it\'s time to enjoy. I go to the shop and see the body guy washing it for the presentation. Everything looks great. The hood looks nice and I think, OK, job well done. Hand over the rest of the cash and drive off. I get a cup of coffee and I figure I\'ll enjoy the sun and appreciate the new hood. Well I look at the front bumper that was part of the deal and I notice a scratch that I filled awhile ago still there. I see a blob of touch-up paint that I put on a nick last summer. I notice that the edge of the bumper there are hacks that were there when I bought the car.

So I call him and I tell him that I\'m coming down because there is a problem. I get there and I show him the evidence and he has the nerve to say that he sanded the bumper. Tell me how the **** you can sand a bumper and not sand down touch-up paint? Tell me! I told him this is no good and I had the bumper done because I wanted to have it look good. It so obvious that this bumper was just buffed out.

Update:

Well I picked up the car today after having them fix the bumper and the paint job sucks and I don\'t think I\'m being too picky. There is a good size drip on the fender near the fog-light and lots of crap and imperfections in the clear coat. After washing the grime off today I even noticed little spots on the hood where he must of ran into some problems so he touched it up and then clear coated over. I think it looks rotten. I can understand that it will not be perfect but there is just too many problems for me to forget about it.

I know I can\'t live with the car like this so I am going to end up having it done right somewhere. I really want my money back but I guess I would have a better chance at getting hit by lightning tonight.

Update:

When I went out earlier to look at it I noticed a bubble on my hood. I guess they did not prep the hood correctly. Now I have to call them tomorrow and try and get my money back because I am not letting them touch my car again.

This has been a real joke/nightmare. Next car=no visual mods!

I posted this on a car board.

Giga, be wary of body shops and I hope you never have to go to one with your MACH.

Funny you mention paint...

First I ordered a touch up stick about 3 weeks ago - the dealership and the dealership by brother in law works at say they can\'t get them because Competition Orange is out of stock.  WTF?  I am reading on the Mach 1 forums that dealers are giving Comp Orange touch up sticks away for free.   I paid for mine and still haven\'t gotten it!

Now on to the real issue... I have 2500 miles on my car and noticed about 2 weeks ago I have about a dozen pinhead sized chips on the front hood.  Apparently Ford paint isn\'t the thickest around, but this is absurd.  There is a recall for paint problems on the hood, but I am very leary considering they will have to take the hood off, sand it down, paint it and put the vinyl stickers back on...  AND HOW DO THEY EXPECT TO PAINT IT IF THEY CAN\'T EVEN GET ME A TOUCH UP STICK!?!?!

The paint on these cars is shit and you are experiencing what a lot of Mustang people experience.

If you get the hood done and it\'s done right you might want to invest in one of these kits. I had it on and you can\'t see it and it works and you can install it yourself. I have a brand new kit ready to go but I\'m not putting it on until I get some good paint.

Ah, getting the Flows put on. Nice! Let me know how they sound. I\'ve been thinking about an X-pipe and a Magnaflow cat-back system myself. Need to save up some cash after this paint debacle, though.

I\'ve heard so many stories like this; it pisses me off that it seems to be such a common occurance.  Paint work is not like mechanical work, where it\'s either demonstrably "fixed" or it isn\'t.  With paint and body work, there\'s an endless number of quality variations.  Body shops know they can get away with a lot of shit because many people won\'t notice, or won\'t have the balls to return the car.

I do have a little area of my car that I would like to have repainted, but I\'m dreading it.  I am putting it off as long as I can, and I\'ll probably look for the most expensive shop in town with the best possible reputation.  It\'s going to cost me $$$$.  :(

My recommendation, Core, is to leave it if you can. I know it\'s tough to do because, like you, I want my car as close to perfect as possible but there are so many potential problems when you drop off a car to have work done.

I am going to fax over a letter now. I know I\'m not gonna get my money back but I have to bust their balls anyway to let them know that there is at least one customer that knows what they\'re doing.

damn! bro i feel your pain, having painting errors are the worst. i hate it when they screw up the painting job.

for me i had a somewhat different problem when i took my car for its 5k service and after  picking it up and stopping at a friends pace i noticed that in a spot (thank goodness its a small one) right next to the windshield the paint was chipped revealing the primer underneath :(.  atleast i got something out of it, coz i\'m getting my foglamps installed for free... but damn its still hurts looking at the spot.

Always ask in forums from people in your local area who does decent, honest paint jobs.  Good idea never to go cheap here because the paint job is the first thing you see when you get to your car everyday.

I\'ve asked but it is no indication of what the shop will do. I think each shop will do good work and bad work depending on who\'s doing the work and how busy they are.

I could have had the hood painted for $1250.00 but that price is ridiculous. I will generalize now and say that all body shops suck!

$700.00 for the work I had done is not cheap, by the way.

well you only got the hood painted right? that sounds pretty expensive to me...yea i know you got the bumper done as well,..still seems pretty steep..i don\'t know how maaco is but they\'ve had deals where you can get the whole car painted for about 250..but i\'ve never been to maaco or know anybody that\'s been there..

wait i do know a chick that went there..she had a ford sho..& had it painted black..paint kept chipping..she took it back like three times before they got it right..so i don\'t know maybe she just had a bad experience...i still feel 700 for the hood & bumper is pretty steep

Maaco sucks - I think they use watercolors ;)

Ace I was kidding, I think $700 for the hood is the right price for a quality paint job.

Frigg\'n body shops suck!

Just got back from the shop that f\'d up my car. He gave me a bunch of bull about how fiberglass hoods can do that and how he broke through to the primer on one edge because of the sharp angles on a Stang. Oh well, lesson learned and seven bills down the drain plus whatever it costs me to do it right.

I feel the need to punch something!
