DVD Special Editions are getting way out of hand
« on: April 27, 2004, 07:37:33 PM »
Kill Bill..  I didn\'t buy it because I figured they would be coming out with a set.

Not only are they coming out individually and as a set, they are also coming out with a special set with more shit.

This is ridiculous.  Just make a good disc and sell the damn thing.

They\'ve already sold 2 million copies.

http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/articles/2004/04/27/greedy_studios_make_dvds_not_so_special/

On the first day of its DVD release, "Kill Bill Vol. 1," Quentin Tarantino\'s ultraviolent, ultrastylish revenge orgy starring Uma Thurman, sold 2 million copies and made a whopping $40 million. Customers snapping up this fairly bare-bones disc -- in addition to the film, there\'s only a making-of documentary, a "Vol. 2" trailer, and video from the Japanese all-girl band the 5.6.7.8\'s, who perform in the film -- probably did so expecting a later version featuring both parts of the film. ("Kill Bill Vol. 2" recently opened in theaters.) But what customers buying the disc didn\'t know was that Miramax is actually planning six different DVD releases of the "Kill Bill" films.

Here\'s how Rick Sands, Miramax\'s chief operating officer, explained it to The New York Times last week:

" `Vol. 1\' goes out, `Vol. 2\' goes out, then `Vol. 1 Special Edition,\' `Vol. 2 Special Edition,\' the two-pack, then the Tarantino collection as a boxed set for Christmas," he said. "It\'s called multiple bites at the apple."
I wear a necklace now because I like to know when I\'m upside down.

It\'s because DVD sales actually trump box office sales these days.  The DVD\'s cost nothing to produce and sell for 15 - 25 bucks a pop and sell a massive amount.  The market is just absolutely staggering in its girth these days and it\'s primarily because of collectors who now feel having every version of a film is something of a hobby and that\'s just something that never caught on with VHS.

I know this guy is gonna buy all the sets...
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

Including any oversea\'s editions that have something I want or need, for example, I am about to place an order for the Japanese version of Vol 1 for the blood and extra anime.

I have triple dipped on a couple of movies. I do not enjoy it, but each version has a new somthing that I would like to have. The lack of inserts bother me worse than 4 releases of a movie. I feel as if I have bought a boot when there\'s no insert.

I\'m not sure if a special edition box set for LOTR came out yet but I was waiting through all these different editions just to get it.  It is rather rediculous but I don\'t see them stopping it any time soon.

They have RotK coming out at the end of May, the super special hyper extended edition around November and then a boxset will be released shortly thereafter.

There is somthing to be said about having your own Library of DVD\'s that rival if not surpass most rental stores.

How many do you exactly have LIC and what are you going to do with all those DVD\'s when they become obsolete?

Don\'t look at me, look at Capcom. We are both approaching the 700+ mark.

And to answer your question, the same thing I did with my VHS - throw them in storage.
