Online games for consoles: player limit issue
« on: May 06, 2004, 02:22:07 PM »
For those of you that love to play alongside fellow players in team-oriented action games such as Unreal tournament, Tribes, etc..than you\'re probably excited about games such as Battlefield: Modern Combat and Star Wars; Battlefront coming out. Also Call of Duty is coming out for the Xbox which also looks cool.

My problem is that compared to the pc games which consistently support 32 and sometimes 64-player servers most of these games only support 16 players online. EA stated that BF: Modern Combat for the PS2 would support 24 players which is a step in the right direction but my point is that if more players are going to get interested in online gaming then companies need to support more players for their games.

Then again some players may not like so many players but I\'m definitely one that believes in, "the more the merrier"

I mean this past fall/winter I was happy to hear that SSX 3 would go online. But to hear that you would race against only one person was kind of a let down. I mean for crying out loud let me race against the 5 or 6 other persons  that the single player campaign supports.

Do you think that with the PS3 or Xbox 2 that player servers will increase? Or do you think that there is no need for further increases in player servers for consoles?

Hey mm what\'s up? I bought my first pc game a couple of months ago in UT 2004. While the game is no doubt good it felt weird as hell playing with a mouse and using the keyboards.

I guess practice makes perfect, but I guess I\'m just not accustomed to playing at my desk with the keyboard. I dunno I just love my consoles and that\'s why I want online gaming to be just as popular for the pc user.

Thats exactly how i felt when i first started to get into PC gaming seriously.

I think it would be great to get consoles on par (or around) with pc\'s. The reason why i dont go online with consoles is that I dont know how large the user base is. That and money doesnt grow on trees. It needs something fresh, but i too would like to check it out one day.

You\'ll find very quickly when playing FPS\'s, online or offline, that your accuracy and agility must be much higher to compete with the better players on the PC in comparison to the console.

Not to say that console FPS\'s suck or anything. GoldenEye was like crack in 1998, Halo is a fantastic multiplayer game.. and my current love, online Splinter Cell, has good play control on the Merc team.

It\'s just the point-and-click ease that makes mouse/keyboard better for FPS\'s and 3D shooters in general.

The problem I have with console online play is there\'s a much higher idiot to d00d ratio.  I keep hearing stories of lots of e-thugs that say "WHAT NOW B*TCH!!!" over their mics to everyone, including kids.

I guess it\'s much like the Linux vs Windows issue.  You\'ll find much less morons on Linux simply because not everyone knows how to use it.  Not everyone has a decent gaming PC either.

Aye, Xbox Live has its fair share of idiots. It\'s not that they can\'t play, but it\'s that this could be their first online experience and when they get good, they get cocky and annoying. The mic is generally used to boast.

Maybe it\'s just me (I\'ve been playing online games for about 6 years now) but I think online gaming is more like a professional sport than anything else. Yeah, you can go "in your face" to those you defeat.. but typically things are fickle. You win some, you lose some.. that\'s what I like to say. If I sucked last round, I try a little harder to kick ass in the next round. Win or lose, I try to have fun.. and I don\'t cheat or stack the teams to gain points.

You gotta love it in Splinter Cell when 2 high-level jerks decide to stack it against you and some first-timer.

Then they jokingly say things to the effect of "good game, almost had us there" after you get owned because your teammate hasn\'t learned the map yet and your level is lower than theirs anyway. *cough*

Take a third person look at your post and tell me that you don\'t sound like an elitist prick.

Be a better person and have some compassion for all people.

The people who you think are idiots because they aren\'t as "1337" as you are with your computer, may just be the person you pay to fix your car or take care of you in the ER......  Things that they know about and you don\'t.

Then who\'s 1337?

Damn, I must be on my period or something. lol

Call me an elitist if you wish, whether it\'s PC or console if someone is a retard it makes me

The PC has its fair share of freaks as well; much more hackers, and a few loudmouths.  I was just picking the lesser of two evils I guess.  People who are full of themselves over a videogame are dumb.

Yeah, the PC realm has poor gamers in volume. Heh, I know you already corrected your post Juslight but come on.. even though the PC gaming scene is filled with pricks (the reason PunkBuster was created, for instance) ... the ratio is bigger on the consoles for the reason(s) I listed. Experience, experience, experience.

Online console gaming is new, and easy to sign up for. A lot of the players haven\'t had the chance to become passive. There\'s no need to try and defend a gamer, because obviously this elitism isn\'t as serious as.. say.. racism. It\'s just video games.

Yeah, I understand.  I was just feeling sorry for the inexperienced people who get blasted verbally.
