yea that\'s tru..whwnever nintendo releases a new mario it\'s always the mother of all mario games..and when a sequel on the ps2 comes out i\'ve people come out and call it the king of sequels...but as long as the games are solid i guess it doesn\'t matter..

Exactly, as long as the sequels go beyond the previous game, then it doesn\'t matter. Infact, in an idea world, we would have a bunch of franchises that are succesful, due to the fact the sequels go above and beyond the call of duty, instead of just being "average". Franchises are great for the companies and gamers, but mostly for the gamers, because you get to know and love certain characters. Nintendo are the  masters of this.

I\'m pretty impressed.. Nintendo has really regained my faith after a sucky Q1-Q2 2004.

Two cool arguments for the DS:

A. It\'ll be cheap, considerably innovative, backwards-compatible, and include upgraded graphics. A different route than Sony\'s awesome but way too straight-forward and expensive "put PS2-level games on portable hardware with movie/MP3 playback" strategy that they\'re going with for the PSP.

B. For those Nintendo fans out there looking at the PSP and going "this kills DS" and performance-wise it does.. remember that GBA2 is coming and will probably rival PSP and debut at a cheaper price a few years from now.

DS is indeed a 3rd pillar. It may be used as a "GBA2" at times but that\'s not its intended purpose.

Mario, Zelda and other are franchises , which means there is sequels. People don\'t lose interest in these franchises due to the fact Nintendo almost always  re-invents the wheel with their franchises. That\'s why you almost never see a sequel to one game, within another years period.

Actually the way I see it is that they use THAT franchise becuase its popular and ensures that their new ideas will work and sell. keep elements people loved previously and add a the new ideas. In the next sequel they delete a few, keep other previous elements and add other ideas thus fans of the game will buy it and feel as if they have a fresh game. They then say ITS INNOVATIVE.
But if they truelly tried to make a totally new platform game if they keep the few previous ideas from Mario and add the new ideas people will be like "hey Nintendo made a new game that reminds of mario.I am dissapointed" despite the "innovative" ideas and the fact that it would have used the same elements as a 100% mario game.
If they keep only the innovation then again it will lack.
Myiamoto always envisions "a superb Mario, a superb Zelda".
And to tell you the truth within a years period or not it still is noticable.
I would have been for example more satisfied  if they skipped Mario sunshine, put more efforts and time on the title and release it now isntead of then, as well as releasing an original title than releasing 2 Marios orr two Zelda\'s etc in one generation.

And one of the reasons why GC is not doing as well is becuase of that reason. They might be superb games but gamers also want something totally fresh.
Its Nintendo that offers the best games on the GC and these games are always based on the same franchises. Its the old gamers that reckognise these games mostly. The new generation doesnt know the good old Mario.Doesnt know the good old Zelda as much. They dont have the strong memories old gamers have. They dont give a damn usually.

When a new gamer buys a GC what he will see is Nintendo. That console screams Nintendo. And what does Nintendo mean?Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid etc.Thats the only thing they see.And thats what they saw previously. They lose interest. For Nintendo fans its gold. For others they feel like they have lost other experiences.
When a new gamer buys a PS2 he doesnt see Sony.He sees tons of companies bringing titles.Sequels and new ones.

Nintendo does the job better with sequels than most companies because all efforts and ideas that can be used to create a completely original game are being used on these succesful sequels and this way ensuring that the new ideas will work.
For me Nintendo takes the fewest risks

i was going to argue a point you made about the innovation part..as everyone always wants to see innovation in every new game or sequel that comes out..but i read the rest of your post and i see where you\'re comin\' from...

What do you mean you see where I am coming from?

I dont have any problem with Nintendo offering great innovative sequels.my biggest complaint is that they dont do something completely new.
Sega for example except from offering their sequels of known franchises they did try to offer with the DC completely new experiences! Not based on previous ideas or names, or fame.Shenmue was one great example

Yeah, it was a great example of a complete failure..

Nintendo is struggling due to lack of third party support, the same thing that bit them in the ass in the days of the N64 / Virtual Boy. Their first party titles sell, but when you look at their line up of games next to the MASSIVE PS2 games , then people go ahead and buy the PS2. It is not Nintendo\'s franchises that are hurting them, infact, it\'s the only thing keeping them alive.

Next....

Right - I mean, it\'s great, we are getting to see MORE of Fable. I mean, how long have we been looking at games like Fable and DOOM 3? Along damn time. The Xbox\'s line up really isn\'t that notable, it\'s either more video\'s of games that have been hyped for over a year now, PC game Ports (DOOM 3 / Far Cry: Instincts) or multi-platform games.  Hardly a great line up.

Nintendo still makes innovative games in new franchises. Pikmin, Wario Ware, and Animal Crossing for example.

There are many reasons why Nintendo games don\'t have the draw they used to.. lack of innovation and franchises are probably a small reason for this. Most people haven\'t even given the GCN a chance..

.. And I don\'t blame them. If you have a PS2 and it serves you well, why bother bogging yourself down with the GCN or Xbox? Most people don\'t have the money. Yeah, Metroid Prime was the best game of 2002.. but PS2 had a pile of good-great games that year and many started to drop in price. Lack of market-share and mind-share are killing Nintendo, not the games themselves.

Rare really needs to step up and deliver. Star Fox Adventures and GBTG were mediocre.

If Conker\'s new game lives up to the original and Kameo (which has been in development for almost 4 years now) lives up to the hype then I\'ll definitely check them out. After SFA, though, I\'m wary of Rare.

You mabe right  but you just described the whys. And thats also why many peope dont care and dont want a GC while there is a certain number that reckognise these titles  and want one at the same time. Its like a double edged sword.
