Will you buy a DVD-DL?
« on: May 12, 2004, 12:50:10 PM »
Alright, how many early adopters do we have on this board? Come the 17th of this month Sony will ship their DVD-DL writer, the Sony DRU-700A  for right around $200 bucks. Every preview / review says it takes around forty five mintues to burn a single DL disc.  So, the question is, will you be an early adopter and buy one or wait?

Me, myself, I have an extra drive bay and have not decided. It\'s either a DL burner (even tho\' I have a Plextor 708A) or a Thermaltake Hardcano 12 Fan controller.

considering, 45 mins, is not THAT bad. I could live with it. While it is a tempting purchase with the extra money to spend, i think ill wait a little longer.

I\'ll wait.  Media is going to be expensive, even if the drive\'s not too bad.  Best wait for gen 2, cut that time in half.

Keep this in mind.

-The burner only record DVD+R Dual layers only.  Probably part of it thanks to Philips for making burning dual layers for the +R media possible.  There has been no words whether the company that first back up the DVD-R will make a dual layer yet such as Pioneer.  They should to compete with the DVD+R...but it seem like the -R is lagging behind...

-I read a website that said you can simply burn dual layer easily by updatint to the new software like a software that burn dual layer like the new Nero 6? which burn dual layer and the burner will burn it dual layer...also to use DL media.  So that may means if you own a DVD burner now, you can burn dual layer easily with the new software.

-Another method to burn dual layer for your current dvd burner is to upgrade the firmware for the burner.

With that said, you can save some cash on buying a lesser expensive dvd burner than the $200 from Sony such as Lite On or Plextor...and could still burn dual layer with either a firmware update or simply a software that burn dual layer or both...

The only DVD-R I have read about that is confirmed to be able to do DVD-DL with a simple firmware upgrade is a Lite-on.

That won\'t happen. Do you honestly think companies will spend all this money making dual layer burners, if you simply can use Nero 6 and burn DL with a simple DVD burner. The closest thing will be a firmware upgrade and even then, as I said above, only one DVD-R has been confirmed for that.

I would rather wait a year or so for a wider range to become available and the prices to come down a bit.

Don\'t forget the Plexor. However I am secptical considering the DL forum has still yet to decide on a final standard.

If I were you i\'d wait for everthing to get ironed out first before buying any of this new DL stuff. WAIT!!!!!!

I never wait. I\'m an early adopter and love the fun of being screwed.:)

If the Plextor is indeed confirmed to burn DL\'s with a simple firmware, then I will wait, due to the fact I do have a Plextor 708A.

Back up movie\'s ( when you have close to 700, trust me, backing up is vital) , storing porn and simply because they are not all that expensive.
