PSP and NDS game lists!

PSP impressions from a poster at Gamiing Age.

Quote
my PSP E3 impressions

While Nintendo is showing off their DStraction, Sony is showing the world their new lifestyle device, the PSP. Like the Walkman and the Playstation before it, the PSP is aimed at mass appeal. From what I saw, I have no doubt in my mind that the PSP will be a success.

Let\'s start with the graphics; compared to the DS\'s N64/Saturn look, the PSP is giving us DC/PS2 graphics in a mobile gaming device. Take the clarity of the Dreamcast and the polygon pushing power of the PS2 and you kind of get the idea of what the PSP games will look like. I\'ve seen first hand what the PSP can do and I\'m still amazed. It wasn\'t a video, it was a real-time gaming demo running off actual PSP hardware; I even played some Namco RPG. This is a true powerhouse here, no joke.

The design; slick to say the least. From the clear shoulder buttons, the fat screen, to the mysterious analog stick, the look simply screams high-end technology. Big? Yes, the closest I\'d say to the PSP\'s size is the original black & white Gameboy.

One large flaw is the machine\'s battery life. Sony was already showing an external battery pack so you know that internal battery is gonna be in for a workout.

Now to the media. It plays those little magic gate cards as well as the UMD. The UMD is a re-writable format, however, the PSP is read only. What does this all mean? Well, so far, Sony is saying that MP3s can only be played off the memory cards. So no, you will not be able to download music off sony.com and into your blank UMD discs. Can you download music or video into a UMD disc using some kind of UMD recorder/player, then play that UMD in your PSP? Possibly, but will Sony allow that? Who knows. We all know if they allow that, it will open the doors to piracy, but will Sony risk losing the mobile MP3 player market to Apple? Who knows. Will it play movies? Yes, the UMDs can store an entire movie. Sony had trailers of the new Resident Evil movie, Hellboy, and Spiderman 2, along with mock-up packaging for movies like Charlie\'s Angels 2 and interactive music UMDs. So do these UMD movies offer anything above the DVD movies that I buy now? No, besides that they\'re playable on your portable PSP. Does Sony expect me to buy UMD movies and UMD music instead of DVD movies and CD music? I guess. Who knows, maybe we\'ll see UMDs integrated in car audio head units with video screens.

Finally, Sony also had mock up PSP peripherals like a cell phone attachment and a qwerty with stylus attachment that both sit on top of the PSP and plug into the USB. Speaking of that USB, what\'s to stop Sony from releasing a micro-HD attachment for your MP3/movie playback? This way, the UMD format is still closed and pirate free and people get their true Ipod alternative.

No, I was under the assumption that he was a hardcore Xbox fan that liked to over-hype every single new Xbox game.

I didn\'t know that he had something against Nintendo until this E3.

Psst.. hey.. Pstwo! Have fun with your battery-eating PSP that plays PS2 games while I sit back in my lounge chair playing innovative games on my DS! Hah!

Now who\'s the fanboy.. hmm? Hmmmm?

Wasn\'t battery life the downfall of almost all the Gameboy competitors?

Battery Life for the PSP is 8 hours game time.

its 2.5 hours for watching movies.

So, basically, it\'s useless on a long road trip / airplane and anywhere you don\'t have an electrical plugin.
I\'ll buy both - but the PSP and DS niether excite me.

That\'s not saying a lot now, is it? Neo-Geo Pocket, at one time was the best offering...Game Gear, at one time was the best offering.. Whoopie! Who cares?

Then again, I do dislike Sony and I hate the fact they are releasing the PSP with it\'s 3D graphics, which may be the final nail in the coffin for true games.... 2D games ....(that and I view Sony fanboys as the lowest kind...)

As for the DS - Dumb idea, Nintendo. You have a secure market with the GBA, why clutter the market more? Just pump out some good sequels for the well known franchises and keep on rollin\'.

Like I said, I\'ll buy, may import them instead of waiting for a US release, but neither excite me in the least and I wish both didn\'t exist.

So far it is the best offering until its proved otherwise.
Are you dissapointed with what you ve seen or because acoording to past handhelds you believe it will fail according to your first statement?
I see support, I see good marketing, I see games. And why not being able to play 3D games wherever you want? Why should 2D games only have this privilage?
You like 2D gaming.Thats fine.3D games cant offer the same feel (thinks of SF EX compared to other Street Fighters).I agree. But just because you seem to like certain 2D games more it doesnt mean 3D games suck generally. There are 2D games that suck and 3D games that rule as well.
I see DarkStalkers in that list. Also these handhelds can handle better 2D games than any other handheld presented so far.
Perhaps you will say Neo Geo did offer great 2D gaming experience. But its dead.If these handhelds manage to stay in the market you have a handheld that will live and introduce an increasing library of 2D games.
Where have you been playing the latest 2D fighting games? Not on handhelds I am sure.In Arcades and a few releases on consoles. These handhelds wont take anything away from the Arcades and neither from any previous handhelds.

Games in the 3D realm have never matched the simple playability that 2D games can offer, yet Sony ignores that and refuses to allow 2D games on their systems for the most part...Thus, my utter distate for anything Sony - that and lack of quality control.

All I said, is niether handheld does anything for me.

Do you know how ridiculous that statement is?
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.
