BLEH on ati
« on: May 28, 2004, 09:28:31 PM »
So I tried going back to ATi after seeing those sexy prices on used 9800 non-pro\'s.  I pretty much spent my whole Friday trying to get the damn card to work.  And now that I can play games on it, it loves to randomly reboot my system.

I\'m getting rid of it and sticking with nvidia.  It\'s a few more bucks extra but it just feels much more stable.

Sorry just venting, but I was really looking forward to playing everything at 4xAA with no problems.  arghhhhhh

On a related note, there\'s been a small controversy about the $175-199 Pro models: They\'re only 128-bit, and clocked lower.. so they\'re significantly slower than the normal 256-bit 9800 Pro (which\'ll run you around $~270~)

In your case, did you exhaust all of your options? It\'s well known that nVidia drivers can mess things up if you install another card.. and apparently they\'re a little difficult to remove. Before you send the card back, try using some driver-removal tools. Guru3D has them.

Yep, nvidia drivers can be a real prick to get rid off totally.  I haven\'t heard of people having those kind of problems with R9800 cards.   But each machine is different.

been running an ATI for awhile now, and no problem with the drivers..

probably the guy behind the computer that as the problem with the hardware, more then the software running it.
can\'t see why not!

guy who sold it to me won\'t buy it back so I\'ll try buying a built by ATi radeon 9800 pro and switch them out.  Not sure if it\'ll help my stability problems but I\'ll have a better card to trade with towards a 5900...

ps- thanks for the driver tips, I actually found the wonderful program called Driver Cleaner after one of my many uninstalls of this card.

I have a 5950 and have had nothing but gaming goodness with it, so take that for what it\'s worth.

For the ppl who have plans on getting a new card @ $ 400 ;

I would recommend waiting for the GeForce 6800 GT. It sits between the 6800 and the 6800 Ultra and it outperforms the
X800 Pro in alot of cases, going by published test results.

It does still feature 16 pixel pipelines, pixelshader 3.0, it occupies only 1 slot and it consumes less power than the Ultra.

Well, it is expected to be the direct competitor of the X800 Pro, which is priced at $ 399

Here\'s an article which shows why imho the 6800 GT is the better choice over the X800 Pro ;

I\'ve got a 9500 Pro and I\'ve never been able to run anything under FSAA or Ansio-whatever.

The graphics look fairly good but there are random artifacts and blank screens throughout the game.

I\'ve been running an 8500 since 2001, and the only game that I\'ve had any problems with is Halo. The game runs fine, but several objects are visible when they\'re not supposed to be. I\'ve never had any more trouble with ati or their catalyst driver suite than I had with nvidia and the then detnator driver suite.
