Last April, I bought a Canon GL2 digital camcorder.
« on: June 30, 2004, 10:06:29 AM »
I posted this at another forum but I didn\'t post here! Buddammit! Anyway...here it is :

When I played the test shot on the widescreen plasma TV, my friends were asking me what I had done to the TV to make the picture so clear as if they were looking out of a window. That\'s how sharp this camera is. It\'s absolutely REALISTIC. You know how Best Buy will use demos on their high end HDTV\'s? The shot I took were on that level, maybe better. Yeah, you can record in 16:9 format.

It\'s not "video-ey" like your current $500 digital cam-corders. This is broadcast quality jonk, yo! :p

I think i\'ll be a porn director now. Serously!  BTW...this camera cost $2500.

I might actually have Vid beat on the consumer camcorder department! :p

THey use the Canon XL1 on a lot of the reality shows.

I think the amazing race uses a lot of these things.

They are cheap as shit and they have a three chip CCD which networks require.

Not sure about the GL1.  I don\'t remember what it\'s got.  The XL1 and the Sony VX2000 kick butt for a pro/sumer camera.

He has the GL2 which is supposedly better than the VX-2k

Whereas I would have put the GL1 and the Sony VX-2000 in the same class, what Canon has done with the GL2 makes it a serious competitor to the Sony PD-150, which uses 1/3" chips and costs about $1000 more.

What makes it nice is those 3 CCDs as Vid pointed out.  You\'re basically capturing 3 separate streams of information and recording them as component natively.  Very nice dood but sell it to me when the consumer hi-def cameras come out. :p  Just fyi w/o getting too technical you could get an even better image if you exported the camera\'s footage through Firewire and onto your PC.  I see it has a "movie mode" where it records at 480p for progressive scan, do you use that?

Also like Cored mentioned we can either make another Moore film or even better, a sequel to Jackass that only costs $5M to make but grosses $65M in theaters. :surprised

PD-150  My bad.  I forgot that was the better one.

1/3" CCDs are still small, but darn good for a personal camera.  THe camera I have at the shop has 2/3" chips.

the 16 x 9 is a fake 16 x 9.  They just cropped off the top and bottom and stretch it to fill the screen.

Its a good thing that its use 3 chips, but the 3 CCDs are only 4 x 3 aspect ratio.  I guess it have to do with cost.  16 x 9 CCD is too expensive for them or something to make.  and talking about 3 CCDs with 16 x 9 aspect ratio, I think that would cost at least $5,000....

Also the size of the CCD really matter.  I am not sure if your model uses 1/3" CCD or 1/4".  The thing is, the bigger the CCD the better.  like 1/3" CCD is better than 1/4", and 1/4" is better than 1/6"....

I am like some people will hold out until the camcorder uses 16 x 9 CCD that cost at a reasonably price...

The idea of a 16x9 CCD seems pointless.  It\'s the same or fewer sensors, just arranged in a different pattern, right?  Why not use a normally shaped CCD, and just mount an anamorphic lense on the camera?  Then when you play it back on a 16x9 television in "Full" mode, it would restore the image to correct aspect ratio, with no loss in resolution.  Is this what people are doing for theatrical exhibition, or are anamorphic lenses used only on film-based cameras?

Nah, I don\'t have a hi def.  SOny DSR570. It\'s got a good head on it, it\'s just a DVCam format.  It\'s a great camera.  About 13 grand for the body, then from about 7-20 grand for the lens.

My camera is 16x9 resident and it crops the sides for 4x3.  So I got a pretty wide lens to compensate.  The image is sharp as hell so I don\'t think it uses the same amount of sensors as a standard 4x3.  I think it has more for 16x9 then cuts the extras off for 4x3.

The GL2 is basically the XL1 without the ability to add higher end lenses. I use movie frame mode most of the time but I try not to use it when I have to pan quickly. I think movie mode is at 24 fps.

Bingo. Anamorphic lenses are what the experienced GL2 owners use. The steadicam is my next buy. G5 (dual 2gHz) will have to wait.
