It appears I ended up with one of the xbox systems with a thompsan drive. It died tonight, and now all I get is you have a dirty or damaged disk. Tried cleaning it to no avail. What a POS!!!!

Mine is starting to get flaky playing DVDs, won\'t read some of the ones I get from Netflix.  Well, I\'ve been using the hell out of it & the used prices are decent so no biggie.

Check out forums\' F/S sections to see the prices on some bundles out there.

Heh...mine died over 2 years ago because of that filthy drive.  Prices have gone down enough so I will be purchasing another Xbox when Halo 2 is released:D

My PS2 is slowly dying.  It\'s starting to freeze up on occassion or simply not respond to a disc.  I\'ve put hundreds of hours on it though so I\'m not suprised.

While man that sucks. I hate when consoles go bad.

There only 149.99 but damn you could put that towards some choice games.

At this point I fear getting another Thompson drive. Is there anyway to tell when I buy another one to make sure it is a new model, or one that has been on the shelf for a year or two?

It was strane how it died. It came up with one damage or dirty disk error, and then after that. That is the error I received on every game after that. I have been taking it very easy on this drive for almost a year.  IMHO the ps2 DRE\'s are minor compared to the xbox drive errors. I know LIC is in close to the same shape as me.

The thing that annoys me most is premium content I paid for on x-box live. From what I understand it will have to be paid for again. This is the biggest pisser to me. THat and the fact some game saves can\'t be transferred off of the x-box. Thanks Tecmo.

Suppose I may buy one, and then open it up in the car, and look to see what kind of drive it has. If it is a thompson then trot right back in and exchange it.

just buy a new dvd-rom and replace the thompson one. no need to buy a new console.

EDIT: I mean a new Xbox DVD-Rom drive and not a PC one.  I remember seeing somewhere that you can buy new Xbox dvd-roms.

From what I\'ve seen they don\'t even sell any of the Thompson drives anymore.  I would also hardly call the PS2 drive errors minor.

PS2s get errors with CDs mostly. But most dont notice since 99% of the games are released in DVD format

As Capcom said, I know mine is in pretty bad shape. It randomly freezes and quite often it won\'t boot up due to disc errors .. Can\'t clean it, etc, so I know it\'s a faulty drive.

I bash Sony for their shoddy consoles and now I will bash MS.....Shoddy ass....piece..of..shit..

Well thats odd cause mine was the opposite then it finally all went to hell.  Personally I think it\'s one steaming pile of shit, with the Thompson xbox drive not too far behind.

Mine still has problems only with CDs.Doesnt steam yet :p
Others have their PS2s longer than mine and they have no problems. They even had their consoles modded to play pirated games and mine that isnt modded has problems
