ATI 30% faster in HL2 than NVIDIA

Doug specifically stated that the ATI x800 was the card of choice amongst many of the testers, as it ran roughly about 30% faster than Nvidia\'s best cards.

Not that this was of any surprise, so I guess all those X800 owners have something to stick in NVIDIA’s face. Interesting though the parallels between NVIDIA’s performance advantage in DOOM3 to ATI\'s in Half Life 2. To be perfectly honest I\'d prefer my card to perform better in HL2 than the Boring and repetitive DOOM 3.

The funny thing is I still plan on purchasing a 6800GT.

I would actually want my card to perform better in STALKER than HL2.

I\'m not to sure about that, if Valve can deliver(no pun intended) what they showcasesd to us, then my bet is on HL2.

Stalker does look pimp, and the way I see this, is a 6800Gt will perform super on HL2, sure the ATI card will be faster, but the NV40 will hold it\'s ground, i\'m sure of it. I\'m going to laugh if ATI\'s X800 performs better then the 6800 like it did with far cry "the way it\'s ment to be played" game.

I dunno, I have lost faith in Valve - sure HL was a great game, but the delays and excuses are pathetic.  I am not as hyped as I was a year ago.

ATI X800 outperforms the Nvidia 6800\'s in Farcry?  Didn\'t know about this, but isn\'t a patch on its way to boost the 6800\'s performance with this game?

One game I really am looking forward to is the new Vampire the Masquerade game.

Actually, the 6800 was only worth anything at pure speed.  The ATI card closed that gap big time when the AA and AF were turned on.  And that\'s for an openGL game, a code that all nvidia cards should be superior in.  The ATI numbers were to be expected for HL2 as it\'s a pure d3d game.  It\'s what ATI cards do and do well, well, that is of course, aside from comparable opengl performance.  ;)

Hmmm I though if you played at max resolution 1600 - then AA didn\'t matter?  Is this correct?

I jumped ship this round from a 9700 Pro to evga 6800 GT - for the price I can\'t complain as for the most part it outperforms the equally priced X800 Pro.  I am pretty happy with the card, but I will say this - it is much bigger (longer) than my ATI card.  I had to move my HD\'s around just to get it to fit!

AA and AF still factor into all games.  For doom 3 however, AA is nowhere near as necessary at that resolution as is Call of Duty.  It varies greatly.  Still though, if you do indeed activate those functions, as some people prefer to do, the x800 is really comparable across the board.

So there is a big difference is AA and AF is activated when playing CoD?  I am going to have to try that.

Do you play CoD Ryu?  If you do I can give our clan\'s rifle only server IP if you want.  A lot of fun.

From what I just played of Doom 3, AA is pretty necessary it seems.  It really does need it.

The 6800u is the card I was referring to.  It\'s marks were only very slightly better then the x800xt with the appropriate aa and af turned on.

Not at all.  But it depends on what model chipset that card follows.  I use a Radeon 9800 pro 128 and after installing the latest beta drivers from ati, I am able to play Doom 3 at 1280x1024 with 8xAF at high detail while maintaining a decent clip.  It\'s amazing just how much performance boost those beta drivers put out.  I was playing the game earlier today and I feel for maximum fragging, you need to play the game at the highest FPS rate possible so I toy with the settings greatly to achieve that [and I mainly focus on quality of visuals only when playing single player] and I noticed that my settings during multiplayer for the best visual quality and framerate balance, my settings jumped from 800x600 with no aa or af at high quality to 1024x768 with high detail, 8xaf, and 2xaa.  That\'s a HUGE improvement from a simple driver upgrade.
