I\'m trying to get into game art so I tried to keep this as low poly as possible. It sits at 7,777 quads which was more than I expected. (I was aiming for 6,000)

SAMMY!!!!!
licks your faceActually, you can find a thread at CGtalk.com that has my progress through the whole thing. There\'s a link in my journal.
Really cool, i wish i knew how to do 3d things.
Did you buy all of your programs? Can I get them for free somewhere? where did you find the best tutorials?
3ds max was a gift. I would have opted for Maya or XSI if I had been more informed. Why just today max corrupted one of my animations, something that happens all too frequently.
Always have a back up. I also have the educational version of Lightwave 7.5 & 8 which I purchased.
Cool app, my favorite modeller, but lacking in other areas.Besides what Quddus is referring to there are tons of options for people who just want to play around with it. Instead of typing it all up myself I\'ll refer you to a page at CGtalk.com
>> Click Me <<There might be some dead links in there because some of those companies have gone under.
My recommendations are the free versions of
Maya (which juslight dl) and
XSI Experience. Both are major apps used for gaming and film and come loaded with tutorials to get you started. The only thing about these is the watermark, you see it\'s quite distracting in juslights render. XSI\'s is less intrusive.
Cool thing about XSI is that if you decide you like it, it has a VERY, VERY, VERY attractive introductory price of $495. Extremely solid app at a very affordable price. If you\'re a student you can get XSI Advanced($7,000 worth of goodness) for $295(extremely good deal)...no watermarks and no limitations except you can\'t use it for commercial work.
Wings 3d and Blender are very popular free programs, although I can\'t personally recommend them as I haven\'t tried them. Silo is a really cool modeling only program, $109.
Depends what program you download/buy but there\'s a wealth of tutorials on many sites. I\'ll refer you to my own site, there\'s a links section of the sites I have used quite a bit. >> Click Me <<
My advice is to pick ONE program and learn it, or learn one aspect you like about it. I\'m into modeling and I\'m just starting to venture into texturing...lighting and animation is a whole other world.
EDIT:
Also, study other people\'s work. http://www.cgtalk.com is all about 3d stuff. You can learn alot just by looking or asking.
