Since I\'m getting a new computer soon, I need to transfer some of my old stuff to my new computer. I\'ve looked at software that does such a function but it cost damn near $55. I figured all you computer guru\'s would know of a way to do such a thing a lot cheaper.

Remove the hard drive from the old PC and temporarily connect it as a slave drive on the new PC.  Copy files to the new drive.  Shut down both PCs and move the drive back.  That is the fastest and easiest way to do it.

My solution is free, and it transfers data faster than any USB cable could.  :)

Isn\'t he getting a laptop? Would be hard to do then. USB is his best hope.

I must agree... I misuderstood your statement. I forgot about your earlier post. I thought you were just teasing me with a free a faster way of transfering data without spilling the beans.

As far as USB cables go. I can use any one of them or is there a certain type I must use? excuse my computer illiteracy.

Or firewire.  Can you link PCs with firewire like you can with Macs?

You\'ll have to reinstall all your programs.  They add some stuff to the registry on install so it\'s not as simple as copying it over.  It\'s not as bad as it sounds, just remember to have all your serial numbers handy.

Unsure how a USB/firewire cable connection would work but if it does go for it.  That would seem the easiest unless you already have a small network setup in your home.

file and settings transfer wizard is built into windows XP.  I used it when I got a new pc and just connected them through my home network (a router).  It took a few hours, but it trasfers all your settings and files.  You have to re-install software yourself, but all the files will be there.

it\'s free and easy to use.  It\'s freaking built into XP... don\'t get no easier than that my friend.

This is what i did but i figured id just keep it as a slave drive instead of wasting the space. The old drive i think is a semi old maxtor.

The question i have though, is would it slow my computer down by having it in there? Windows and all of that run off the Main drive but is it possible? I was never sure. Ill have to get a new HD soon anyway.
