What do you know about knoppix?

After liberating myself from I.E. and seeing nothing but positive results, I\'ve considered partitioning my hard-drive to run Knoppix.  This decision comes based on the fact that my laptop is not going to be doing any heavy processing, and I\'ve always wanted to see a life beyond windows.

So, anyone got any personal feelings? Or anything to note?

knoppix runs from cd, no need to partition anything

if you wanna start to run linux, go with red hat or suse.  then you can progress into slackware and debian

there\'s no real point in running linux if your just gonna use the GUI x session

Only problem with this is the fact that Linux > Laptops are not exactly best of friends. You\'ll need to do a lot of research on what laptop you have and what Linux Distro\'s support it. Chances are your laptop won\'t be supported and if it is, there will be still some heavy modifications to your Linux Distro needed to get something workin\'.

Liberating your web browser and running a new os are completely different things.

Do as mm suggested and run Suse or Red Hat. I would start with Suse and run their KDE. It is a closer look and feel to windows.

I have to agree with Capcom, running a new web browser and running a new OS is way different. Take it from someone who has done it. I use to be Windows based, then I went to OS 9, then I went to OS X and now I am back to Windows XP. You really have to relearn everything you know, figure out the kinks of each OS and even find programs that do what you want them to do.. Good luck on your liberation of a Microsoft product, but it isn\'t an easy road and doin\' it on a laptop will be even harder.

let me emphasize this

You really have to relearn everything you know

there\'s NO .exe files in linux

especially if you run something like debian, you have to apt-get every single command or program you want.

in my experience, install linux on a laptop and watch your bios crap on you, and your laptop to overheat.  If your laptop starts to turn off by itself over and over, reflash your bios, as I\'ve seen it happen a couple of times now.

It is great you want to try another OS, but I don\'t think you are taking this serious enough. Have you ever ran a *Nix Distro? If not, you are in for a surprise..Espically on a laptop, where most your power mangement, intergrated graphics / sound may not be supported .

Still, if you are goin\' to do it, go SuSe.
