PSP slipping to 2005?

"Sony\'s PSP is at "high risk" of a substantial delay--into next year for Japan, and perhaps all the way to November 2005 for the US market. That\'s the word from two separate memos sent on consecutive business days from noted industry analysts.

http://adlog.com.com/adlog/i/r=7027...on/dotclear.gif
On Friday, PJ McNealy of American Technology Research published a report that questioned whether the PSP software shown at the Tokyo Game Show--much of which was only 50 to 60 percent complete--would be ready for the Japanese launch of the system, currently slated for this December. "The launch of the PSP in Japan this holiday season continues to be at risk," McNealy wrote. "If [Sony] misses the PSP Japan launch schedule, it could affect the announced March North American launch and would be considered a negative to the video game publishers."

McNealy went on to describe two "likely" scenarios for the Japanese launch of the system. The first was a December launch with a "disappointing" launch lineup of "approximately five or fewer titles." This would seemingly contradict Electronic Arts\' announcement that Tiger Woods and Need for Speed would launch alongside the PSP in Japan and the US, although McNealy did note in his report that "not all targeted launch titles were likely shown at TGS."

The TGS report on PSP was good but not spectacular and it seems that Nintendo is right on track with the DS...

What do you think?

blah

i don\'t like handheld.  If i go somewhere outside, i would likely play something or hang out rather than playing a handheld...unless I am at home where I can play games on the tv or watch video with family or friends...

Sony entered this market unprepared. For one reason I say this, to much adds to the price. They can delay it and hope the price on hardware will come down.

True. Coming into this area of gaming came to fast with the psp. Its no surprised that it might be delayed. Same thing with the DS (though nintendo already has the handheld market and knows more about what they are doing).

We still havent heard of a price yet so how were we to expect the damn thing in fall? Makes no sense. I know im not heart broken so w/e.

Maybe..... but not THAT likely. I wouldn\'t be surprised if PSP will launch as late as Xmas 05 ; which may not be a bad thing for PSP.

The U.S. might not see it this year but it looks like Japan will.

PSP: Definitely This Year
In Japan, anyhow.

October 07, 2004 - There\'s been some analyst-fueled concern that Sony\'s PSP portable won\'t be seeing Japanese release this year. Sony Computer Entertainment put that suggestion to rest today through Japanese website Famitsu.com.

The website features an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Technical Officer Masayuki Chatani. Responding to concerns about a delay for the system to next year, Chatani says, "We\'ll definitely be able to launch at the end of the year. Rest assured." He adds, "The state of development for the PSP is far better than it was for the PlayStation at the time."

Of course, this doesn\'t do too much for the few stateside diehards who were hoping for a surprise 2004 launch in America. However, we\'re sure Japanese fans eager to get their hands on SCE\'s sexy new system will take extra care to save their yen in anticipation of a December launch.

I don\'t mind PSP being delayed. It\'s still light years ahead of the boring DS, which I\'m not going to buy.

SOURCE: Slashdot
Quote:
PlayStation Portable is very much on course for release in 2004, according to Sony Computer Entertainment chief technology officer Masa Chatani, who has also revealed some new details of the device\'s interface.
Speaking to Famitsu this week, Chatani said that PSP would be out in Japan before the end of the year, with a worldwide launch in Q1 2005 - and reminded people that even the original PlayStation launch wasn\'t announced until a month prior to its December 94 ship-out.

"We made release within the year, and our plan to sell the PSP within the year is secure as well, so please be at ease," he told Famitsu. Analysts have raised doubts over those targets though, focusing on the lack of a release date or even a price point and arguing that an early or even mid-2005 release is a far more likely prospect.

Meanwhile, Chatani also revealed a few technical details about the PSP. When booted up, the system will present users with an interface for managing the clock and save files, and a media player for playing MP3s and other media files stored on Memory Sticks, and you can return to this interface at any time by pressing the Home button. Even in-game - it\'ll just prompt you with a Yes/No command box.

The media player itself will apparently use the same Cross Media Bar (XMB) design as the multimedia PSX unit, and load times for booting up games are comparable to the PlayStation 2, Chatani told Famitsu. He also revealed that the process of ejecting discs will be similar to a MiniDisc player - the hatch will pop up a little way and you\'ll do the rest.

However Chatani did not comment on the other weighty question mark lingering over the PSP - battery life. This despite recent reports that Sony would expect developers to ensure their own titles could survive for more than a few hours by giving them battery emulation tools.

Further adding insult to injury, Nintendo\'s charismatic Reggie Fils-Aime took a pop at the PSP from the podium at the DS press event in Seattle - one of the first times Nintendo has had a direct stab at the PSP, which it generally claims it does not consider a direct competitor.

Looks like Sony is set to launch despite reports of hot transistors, a lackluster launch lineup, and the rumored short battery life.

HELLO BOBO! :D

Frainky, I don\'t see much point in the PSP. It doesn\'t offer anything more than a portable playstation. Which is what it\'s supposed to be, I know. :p Sure it\'s got really nice graphics, but that tiny tiny screen won\'t make it shine. The Nintendo DS seems much, much more interesting!

It seems to me like so so much more than just a portable Playstation. What the hell are you talking about?

Oh, and hello!
