I suppose I\'d be more excited but I\'m still bruised from Jak II.  It sounds like they have included well placed check points which were sorely lacking from Jak II.  Also sounds like they haven\'t gone back to the platform goodness of the first game:(

It might be used on the characters in the cut scenes, I noticed something that looked like bumpmapping on Daxters chest.

Anyway, bumpmapping is ugly, low res and looks like plastic.

So less = better.

Use real textures instead. :)

What are you talking about?  Bump-mapping is great and it is done on the texture level so I\'m not sure what you meant by it not being real texture.

Well, perhaps its a real texture. But I perfer them using high resolution textures instead of the blurry shit that is bumpmapping, imagine how good the clothes on Jack from Far Cry could look, now he\'s just a blurry mess.

I dont like it, looks like crap in most games (just because your game support it, dont overdo it).

I dream of the time when they dont have to fake bumps, instead do them in polygons. :)

Right now alot of games are limited, due to low memory restrictions, to small map sizes with low resolution.  I\'m hearing that next generation it will be possible to have maps as large as 2048X2048 compared to today\'s that often cap out at 512X512 and the more rare 1024X1024.  Most console games use dozens of smaller sized textures like 64X64, 128X128, and 256X256.

Well, there is a method called normal mapping that some games are using now, Doom 3 comes to mind, and I believe that\'s were games are headed.  (I think Halo 2 uses this method as well, but I\'m not entirely sure.)  There are some objects using as much as one million polys, if not more, that are represented by low poly objects.  You get all the detail without having to use the enormous amount of resources.

The technique that Doom3 and Far Cry use (not entirely sure, just something I remember hearing) is they take high poly models and create bump maps from those models (saves them the time creating them in hand and they\'re more accurate). Then they create low poly models and use the bump maps created through the high poly model with the low poly models. Think the technique is called polybump.

The next big thing in mapping is displacement mapping (it actually looks 3D, instead of just being lit and shaded like it\'s 3D but still looking 2D (the latter is bump mapping).

That is normal mapping.

Polybump is just a technique that you use to create normal maps through high poly models. While Polybump does use normal maps, that\'s not all it does. Just check the CryTek link you posted.


What\'s the difference between normal maps and bump maps? Is it that normal maps have the \'bump\' capability of bump maps as well as highlights and other stuff, like in this picture:

Polybump is a plugin for 3d apps used to preview/create normal maps.  There are quite a few that do the same thing...here\'s another one.

I\'ll refer you to one of the tutorials I read when I was learning about normal maps, it also happens to explain bump maps.  He explains it better than I could plus there are pictures...
