Sony to Power Next Xbox?
« on: November 02, 2004, 12:47:09 AM »
"In a turn of events that is sure to shake up the industry once again, there is currently a rumor in circulation that the next Xbox will be powered by the exact same chip as the PS3.

As you probably already know by now, PSINext is not in the business of spreading rumors, but in some cases, like this one, they are backed with enough support to warrant a post.

Some of you may know that all three consoles will be powered by IBM processors in their next iteration. If you didn’t know that, now you do. It was initially rumored that Microsoft would just a juiced version of the IBM PowerPC chip currently being used in the Apple G5. Now, there is some talk that they will use the Cell chip – the chip designed by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba.

This means a couple things if this is true. 1) Sony will dominate the videogame market once again. Unless Nintendo comes out with something way beyond the power of the PS3, Sony will have their hands deep in the pockets of both the PS3 and the Xbox2. 2) The Xbox will be delayed until around the same time Sony will launch the PS3. The processing plants are currently being set up for mass production for Sony. Microsoft would have to wait their turn or share the production. 3) Microsoft has bowed out to Sony. This would be the ultimate sign of defeat for a once proud Microsoft gaming company.

So as you see, this recent rumor spells a lot of changes for Microsoft, more than I think they would like to burden. Stay tuned as this rumor develops."

This is one of the stupidest rumors I\'ve heard in a long time, and I hope it\'s not true. It wouldn\'t make any sense. SO much BS, I don\'t know what to believe...

Author is a dramatic whore.

If MS helped design the CPU in the PS3 no one would give a damn, but if it\'s switched around it\'s Microsoft\'s "ultimate sign of defeat."

If they do use the CELL chip then good for them (would lower the cost in vast numbers and ports would be a breeze) but the CPU isn\'t the make it or break it piece of the console.  Remember how hyped the Emotion Engine was?  The 32-bit CPU in the Xbox ended up serving games better, but as you know it\'s not the best-selling console.

I disagree. It\'s the 128bit EE which makes for example MGS2\'s AI routines more complex than say, Splinter Cell\'s which is Xbox native.

The only thing which keeps the PS2 from topping Xbox is the lack of raw speed, smaller amount of RAM and a lesser graphics processing unit.

Physics, AI and particle FX the PS2\'s EE > Xbox\'s Intel cpu.

Anyway, this is indeed a BOLD rumour. If there\'s any truth to it I also wonder how the next Graphics Synthesizer will shape up (maybe Ati \'ll help).

Oh man....that news is one of those "hook, line and sinker" that I ain\'t biting on. This is something I wouldn\'t dare bring up in a conversation with my co-workers who are Xbox freaks until I KNOW it\'s true.

Yeah...I was laughing for a good solid 5 minutes when I read it. Especially the line:

"As you probably already know by now, PSINext is not in the business of spreading rumors, but in some cases, like this one, they are backed with enough support to warrant a post."

Like...the article that it originated from is like 2 sentences long. They must have been smoking something...
