Getting a new P4 CPU fan - advice.

Im going to replace my TaiSol P4 CPU cooler. The TaiSol is thermostat controlled, and once the CPU reaches a certain temperature (66-67 C, quite high!) it will speed up to 4400rpm for a few seconds, extremely annoying as it sounds like a jet blasting away 1.5 meters from my right ear! Not only that I want to get the temperature down a bit, from 47-50 idle to 66C during load.

Anyway, I have been thinking about getting this one.



Its a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Heat Pipe Socket 775

At first I was going to buy the Zalman CNPS7700-CU CP but I am uncertain if it will fit on my motherboard as the CPU fan is a 128mm fan. I doubt my mobo has enough room for that.

Before I order the Arctic Cooling I wonder if you have any others to recommend? I know a few of you run P4 processors, what do you use?

if that\'s the same arctic cooling company that made the NV5 silencer for the 6800 gt/ultra cards I say go for it.  I have that graphics cooler and it\'s a very solid and well-built product.

There\'s another Zalman model that\'s only 90mm if you have space problems.  You may have to get the separate brace to make sure it works with the 775 chips.

Thanks, it seems quite good. I read another review, and the reviewer said the original boxed cooler sounded like a turbo when it was running at max effect compared to the arctic one, my current cooler sounds like that once the temp is over 66. Extremely annoying as you might imagine, I can barely hear my games.

Quite and good at cooling down the hot Prescott processors, sounds almost too good to be true.

How much does it weigh?  looks pretty beefy. If fan noise shits you, get a rheobus.

That’s the one I was thinking of getting first, but wasn’t sure if it would fit on my motherboard, so Im going with the Arctic Cooling one.

Btw, I applied some Arctic Silver 3 on my current cooler, it brought the idle temp down to 45! But, it does not keep the fan from speeding up once the CPU reaches 66.

I have now ordered the Freezer 7, I hope I get it soon so I can start playing some games again.

That\'s the 92mm model.  It would probably fit your case and provide you with all the cooling you\'d need for overclocking.  The 120mm (7700 model) is bigger and should theoretically be quieter.

Well I got the fan today, the Freezer 7. Overall impressions, so so.. The arctic paste I got with the fan was dry as a ... camel turd! Very hard do spread out, so I used my good old Arctic Silver 3. The build quality of the whole thing is also so so..

After many attempts (the core of the cooler did not want to touch the CPU properly) I finally got the temperature down by aprox. 10 degrees, which is fine by me. The maximum temperature I have registered was 58 degrees, and that is far below the magical 66-67 when the computer wants to speed up the fan.

So Im happy, but I was ready to stab the damn thing with the screwdriver a few times.
