Meh. My tv is fairly large but its old as shit. Luckily is japanese and was super future proofed. Anyway, im not on the whole progressive/HDTV thing so i really dont care. The rez is fine for the time being and im not going to blow a fuse because its not superbly sharp.

I kinda agree with you there.

if it ain\'t broke don\'t fix it, or upgrade to a new tv.  Since the prices of hdtv are slowing dropping steadily, pretty soon, you can get a decent size hdtv that cost the same as analog set.  Waiting is good, especially 1080p hdtv is around the corner...

THX,

It\'s not real 1080i material it\'s working with. It\'s taking the 480p source and upscaling it to 1080i. Yes 1080i has been well documented but people still don\'t understand how it works for the PS2.

Neither do you, as it seems. The PS2 is giving you a real 1080i signal. 1080i was possible due to field-rendering and a restricted line with.

In Example; the 1080 pixel height is definately accurate, since it\'s done using field rendering from a 480p image. That means that per field rendered frame only half of the pixels for height have to be drawn (which doesn\'t cost more then rendering the 480 pixels for 480p - well, okay, a bit more but that\'s nitpicking). The width is done using a horizontal scaling of the 640 pixel wide image, but the result still gives you a real interlaced 1080 signal.

I find it far more impressive that Polyphony have actually worked on a flicker filter to reduce the flickering, rather than turning a 480 progressive signal into 1080 interlaced one.

:)  This was discussed on AVS by technical snobs WAY before you knew about it.  Upscaling 480p material works wonders, we\'ve been doing it for years to DVD, but I guarantee you this will not look as good as HDTV.  Even better it doesn\'t display 1080i, it\'s actually 960i, and Sony has their own method of scaling called DRC that is popular in their higher priced TVs and you know what it scales to?  960i.

"The Hi-scan 1080i is just a scan conversion of 480p. It\'s maximum resolution is only 920i, which is still enough for it to be considered 1080i. It\'s not true 1080 High-definition video images. It runs at 30hz+30hz. much like 480i, but with 920 lines instead of 480."

Look at these comparo shots.  If you think the image on the right is true HD you probably don\'t have an hdtv.  THe "upsacled" look to me is plain as day.

yea, i got mine on launch and it should be able to do it.  Despite my argument above I\'m really looking forward to playing this in 1080i.

It\'s not true 1080 High-definition video images.

What about it isn\'t "true" 1080i? Are you asking for a 1080p or a 1080i signal? In anycase, it is an interlaced signal, thus field-rendering can be applied which is what Polyphony is doing to achieve double hight resolution (shown in the picture comparasment). What about this don\'t you grasp?

No different than a 480i signal that would be drawing 640x240 buffers at a 60 Hz interval compared to a 480p that would need 640x480 at 60 Hz (the progressive signal requires double the amount of pixelfillrate). The same is applied above with 1080i, taking advantage of the interlaced output, using field-rending (half the pixels need to be drawn only) to achieve the double verticle resolution (960).

I know you\'re never going to agree with me but I\'m not disputing the PS2 from spitting out a 1080i signal, it\'s fully capable of that.  I\'m just trying to say the 1080i won\'t be what you\'re expecting if you\'ve been exposed to Discovery HD or something similar.

Think of true 1080i as the V8 engine in the new Ferrari F430.  It spits out 490 horses.  Then take a WRX STi which is only 4 cylinders.  You can easily mod it to output 490 hp but it isn\'t the same as the other engine.  The power output from the Ferrari will be smoother and will have a much flatter torque curve.

So yes they both achieve the same numbers, but the Ferrari is much, much better.

THX,

My only grudge about your argument is that you are criticizing the wrong aspect about this 1080i conversion. It\'s not the number of lines that is the problem (if it\'s 920 or 960 with black borders really isn\'t the issue IMO) - it\'s the scaling of the horizontal resolution.

As you see from the aliasing in the picture comparasment is that the 1080i signal has much less (because of the double vertical resolution making it a 1080 signal) - if you look closer though, you\'ll spot that the horizontal lines are equal in both pictures, meaning that only the amount of lines have been doubled, not the horizontal resolution.

The other thing that isn\'t nice is that the resolution of the textures aren\'t obviously in the same league...
