Computer loud as hell!
« on: March 16, 2005, 11:08:17 AM »
It\'s finally starting to drive me a little crazy how loud my computer is.  What are some good things to try and quiet it down?

I remember some people here talking about fan controllers, I take it they adjust the speed of your case fans?  What model is best (under $25 pref).

Is there anything else I can do that will help?  Does cutting out fan shields cut down noise enough to be worth it?

4 steps to a quiet PC:

1) New CPU HSF

-- Zalman
-- Thermaltake

2) Graphics card cooler

-- Arctic Cooling

3) Quiet PSU

-- Fortron
-- Nexus
-- Seasonic
-- SilenX

4) Fan Speed Controller

-- Zalman
-- Thermaltake

Find what the source is and start from there.  If it suddenly got louder it\'s most likely the VGA fan.

thanks, the slientpcreview site looks pretty helpful.

It\'s not that it suddenly got louder, I just don\'t want to put up with it anymore.  Some nights I stay up late to game and have to keep the volume down, I can\'t hear it well enough over the droning fans.  My case also just recently started rattling for about 5 mins when I first turn my computer on then gradually going away, I guess the easiest way to find the culprit is to take the side off and plug in one fan at a time?  Maybe use some rubber gaskets or something?

I already got the NV silencer 5 on my 6800gt so that\'s quiet.  I don\'t OC my processor (yet).  I might try activating the cool \'n quiet and see if that helps.

I guess the trick to controlling your fan speed is to monitor your temps and find a nice temp when just browsing the web and stuff, then crank it up when starting a game?

That\'s the gist of it.  I only have one 92mm case fan aimed at 3 harddrives.  Many people overdo the # of internal case fans.

Fix it the Russian way!...throw it against a wall or kick it really hard.
