Regardless of what you think of the game this kid is an idiot and the Swedish Consumer Association are even bigger idiots:
World of Warcraft is cheating you! (Swedes say)
Oh wow, consumer journalism reaches a new all-time high.
Many European countries have dedicated TV-shows for consumer journalism that focus on the consumers\' concerns and the many ways they can get cheated.
In Sweden there\'s a show called Plus, and it found out about a gruesome scheme called World of Warcraft.
A young Swede, Jonas Nilson, bought World of Warcraft: Collectors\' Edition. Once he got home, he was quite angry when he discovered that he actually needed the Internet to play WoW. After pulling a cable into the living room to his laptop (yes, laptop), he got another surprise: the monthly fee. Finally the 12+ PEGI rating didn\'t really match with the Blizzard site, which said 18-year-old. So he calls the shop (Elgiganten) to get a refund, which they rejected.
This prompted him to complain to the Consumer Association, which ruled in favor of Mr. Nilson. The result was a prime spot in the Swedish TV-show Plus, which conclusion was that "a monthly fee in computer games is just a clever way to get people\'s money" and that consumers should "watch this latest trend in computer gaming carefully".
So what\'s wrong with that?
The box says that Internet is required.
The box says there\'s a monthly fee to be paid.
PEGI-ratings are NOT handed out by Blizzard. The 18-year old requirement on the site is related to payment and credit cards.
Elgiganten should of course refund you if the product isn\'t as it was described. But it was...
If you\'re clever enough to read through the user conditions to realise that there\'s a different age recruitement than the the one the box, you should be able to read on and realise that Blizzard actually offers to refund your money if you\'re not satisfied with the conditions.
The monthly fee is not some devilish scheme to steal your money. It\'s by no means cheap to pay for hundreds of developers and supporters in several locations around the world in order to keep the game running and continue its development.
