I think you\'re misguided as to why Americans remake foreign films. You can bet a robe and a wizard hat that Miramax (or whoever) didn\'t back The Ring solely because of its foreign box office potential. They did it because Ringu was a great concept and doing fairly well. But they\'d consider what move would be the most profitable:

A) Buy the American distribution rights and release Ringu in theaters

B) Buy the rights to remake it with American cast and crew

Obviously they chose option B because releasing a Japanese movie to Joe Sixpack would be B.O. death.

EDIT: If it then does well overseas too, that\'s just a nice added bonus.

But then who\'s to blame - the producers or the audience?

Americans just ain\'t quite ready for the lead actor in a non-stereotypical role to be non-American. There is yet to be a lead Asian male in a romantic movie unless there\'s martial arts involved. Take for instance....THE RING! Wow. Replace the Japanese lead actors with Americans....IN JAPAN! How about that!

BWAHAHA!

Oh man....that\'s funny!

Another example is Bruce Lee and David Carradine. Bruce Lee\'s brainchild for the series "Kung Fu" was supposed to have him as the lead actor in a stereotypical role. But the Hollywood execs put in David Carradine instead. :D

I think THX should lead the charge of Asian actors in a non-kungfu flick...where he gets the white girl. (Jet Li never got the white girl in any of his movies here either, I think)

EDIT - Oh yeah...forgot to mention the most important part "That is why they remake a lot of Foriegn Films for the US audience"

This isn\'t about foreign films...

This is about the ignorance of some Europeans\' views of Americans...
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

Yeah, and we were just discussing one of those \'ignorant\' situations... and whether or not it was so ignorant in the first place. :)

But yeah, as I said before, there are plenty of stereotypes on both sides of the water. Not all French people stink and not all Americans are fat.

Why can\'t we all just live in peace and harmony...

EDIT: You could also say this is about the ignorance of some Americans\' views of Europeans. :)

US vs EU bashing is so 2002. ;)

I can\'t speak for anyone else, but I don\'t have a single problem with Europe.  Actually my wife and I were trying to move to Europe for a year just to experience it.  But not having any friends or family in Eu to vouch for us kinda killed the whole thing.

Hell I was born in Germany, but you know what I can\'t stand some of the foreign people here but in the same sense, I think a lot of the foreign people here are cool. So it evens out.

That\'s true. You can\'t judge a country or area based on individuals. I mean, many people seem to think that people living in the middle east are all some sort of terrorists. They tend to forget about the average common man, who\'s just living his life without doing any harm to anybody.

:) Well, I\'m glad to see this thread has some sane consensus at least. Believe
me ; here in the Netherlands there are
quite some ppl who go on summer vacation in France but alot of them also say that France is a great country and say ; "It\'s just, it would have been a whole lot better without the French" ( lol ).

I believe we have some voting ballots here for voting for or against a European
Union groundlaw constitution.
I wonder what kinda percentages will show up per country and what they\'ll vote.

Anyway..... the point was that President Bush has ppl who are with his policy and ppl who are against that policy.

Amongst those ppl \'against\' it are just some activists who demonstrated. They weren\'t demonstrating against the USA as a country nor the USA ppl.

The guy at the NV forums, was however, spreading hate towards the European ppl just becuz some newsreport reported that there \'were a few thousand left wing activists saying their thing to Bush about his policy\'.

Rotten apples are indeed to be found all around the globe

Samwise is not a hobbit, he\'s a great big Dane who used to strike fear in the small thin boned Brits.

Danelagen still rules (and Carlsberg)! :D
