Epic has announced that its cutting edge toolset Unreal Engine 3 is to be offered as part of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.’s development package for PlayStation3. The deal means that the engine, which is currently being used to develop Gears of War on Xbox 360, is set to feature in the development of games for two of the three next-generation consoles as well as next-gen PCs.

Making the announcement, Tim Sweeney, CEO and co-Founder of Epic Games, “We are committed to making Unreal Engine 3 the best game engine for the “PLAYSTATION®3…We plan to offer it to our licensees as soon as the program is underway and we are very excited about the level of performance and visual quality we will be able to deliver on this platform. In addition Unreal Engine 3 should be an excellent fit for the platform and our licensees will benefit immensely from the experience we have been able to gain thus far working with it.”

We’ll have more on Unreal Engine 3 and the games being developed with Epic’s toolset shortly...

Good or bad?

At least it puts the heat on EA with their newly acquired Renderware engine. :D

So this will be freely available to PS3 licensed developers? If so, then I\'d say it is a good move, a nice SDK and developer support from Sony and the Nvidia guys = happy developers. It\'s no wonder why publishers are moving projects over to PS3 from other consoles. :D

That’s what I though too - included in the SDK. But its not, its "only" available for licence for the PS3, so you\'ll have to get an Unreal licence also.

today Epic announced that it intends to offer its Unreal Engine 3 technology and tools under Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.\'s Tools and Middleware program for "PLAYSTATION ®3" as soon as the license program is started.

Still not bad, it will give EA some heat with the popular Renderware engine. :)

Does that mean they get paid when other people use the unreal engine?

If yes, thats a good business strategy. Its like an investment, the money keeps on coming even when they are not working.

Actually I believe Unreal made the deal with Sony, and Sony is adding the Unreal Engine 3 to its developers tools.

I bet Unreal gets to publish games for the PS3 without any royalties as well as other perks in exchange for the providing Sony with the tools.
