Apple hasn\'t been satisfied with IBM\'s work on the G5, they were promised 3Ghz two years ago and they haven\'t delivered.
It\'s been semi known that for the last few years they have had versions of OS X compiled and ready for x86 as a backup plan.
Seems Apple and IBM had a falling out, knowing Steve he probably threatened the IBM guys and they called his bluff, so he just gave them the finger and went Intel.
This is the third big transistion for Apple and the 2nd ISA transition but they plan to have gone fully Intel in 2007.
For many maclots this is a kick in the balls, they\'ve been touting ppc superiority for a while and now must sample the bitter taste of Intels penis in their mouths.
This will mean better pricing and huge updates to the powerbooks.
Some people think this means they can install OS X on their beige boxes, this is not the case they will still be a hardware company and won\'t be using a traditional BIOS in the machines, OS X will only run on Apple machines (though no doubt some hackers out there will be able to get it running on a traditional system)
and on the Intel side, it would seem they approached Apple first. A few months back Intel\'s ceo made a some remarks on how much he wanted Intel cpu\'s in macs one way or the other so he could run his machines without spyware and whatnot.
