Mouse cursor has a life of it\'s own.
« on: June 29, 2005, 06:23:14 AM »
Ever since I got my new computer last year, my mouse cursor has a tendency to fly off the screen, or shoot over to the start button of it\'s own accord. I\'ve not really paid it much attention as it\'s usually only done it on very rare occasions.

Over the last week, it seems to have started doing more frequently, and I find it most annoying when I\'m doing something that requires me to actively use the mouse to carry out a function.

Example:

I might be working in paint shop pro, and will be working on something that requires a lot of patience and sutblelty. I can be there, minding my own business painting a section of the page, then without warning, the cursor will shoot off to the side and leave a big line of paint behind it, resulting in me having to keep undoing the last action.

It is also an inconvenience when I\'m playing games that require the use of the mouse to drag things around, as well as if I\'m repositioning programs on my desktop (like msn, adaware etc), if I\'m moving them and it decides to take off, the program window gets moved off the screen and out of visible view.

I know it\'s not the mouse itself, as I bought a new one not long ago, and I\'m pretty certain it\'s not driver related as the latest ones came on the disk that came with it.

Anyone know how to stop it doing this?

if it\'s an optical mouse it\'s probably your mousepad.  Try a different surface (even the bare table) and see if it\'s any different.  I had a dell mousepad at my old job that would make my cursor very jittery and jumpy at times.  Changed my mousepad and it fixed my problem.

It is an optical mouse, but I have tried all sorts of surfaces, and it still does it.

It\'s not that it\'s a little bit jittery, like I said, it jumps clean off the screen, the rest of the time, it jumps straight to the start button.

is it wireless as well?

if so then you have some interference coming from somewhere.  Do you have a cordless phone within 25ft or your computer?

Nope, it\'s connected to my computer by cable, and I don\'t have any phones near my computer.

I have this problem on one of my work computers too. I think it\'s just due to a cheap mouse.

Check the lens. There might be something that is affecting the laser. My old work mouse would jump and I eventually found out that there was a hair under the laser.

Nope, that\'s not it. I just checked, there\'s nothing in there. It\'s done it with every mouse I have had.

When they start accepting dollars in british shops, I will.

That\'s the problem you see, we can\'t pay with monopoly money over here, we have to use the real deal.

:)

whoa, that is quite expensive to paid a mouse 50 pounds.  Must be some sort of special mouse.  For a mouse to be that expensive, I would expect it to be very good quality.  But for it to act up like that sucks.

It\'s not the mouse, the mouse is only a couple of months old. In total, I\'ve used 3 mice on this computer since I got it, and it\'s done it with each of them.
