2% of Japanese want the 360

Gamers in Japan are looking forward to the PlayStation 3, but they have almost zero interest in the Xbox 360. Those are the results of a private survey taken by Infoplant, a marketing research company, which found that 60 percent of gamers picked Sony\'s PlayStation 3 as the next-generation console that they are looking forward to the most, but only 2 percent were interested in Microsoft\'s Xbox 360. Nintendo\'s Revolution came in second place at 8 percent.

The lack of interest in the Xbox 360 among Japanese gamers isn\'t surprising, considering how poorly the current-generation Xbox console has been doing in the country. According to a recent report by Famitsu, the Xbox console sold only 9,045 units throughout Japan during the first half of 2005. In comparison, the PlayStation 2 sold 1,286,882 units, and the GameCube sold 159,559 units. Not a single title for the Xbox ranked in the top 100 sales chart for the six-month period.

The survey\'s results must be troubling for Microsoft, which is waging a widespread campaign to interest Japanese consumers in the Xbox 360. The company has announced a number of famous developers that will be creating games exclusive to its next-generation console, including former Square producer Hironobu Sakaguchi and Sega\'s Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

However, the all-new 360 games apparently aren\'t generating as much attention as Microsoft had hoped. 80 percent of the surveyed gamers said they were most interested in playing sequels of major current titles on the next-generation consoles, and 30 percent said they are looking for remakes of past titles. The top three genres that gamers are looking forward to are role-playing games at 70 percent, followed by strategy and action games, both at around 50 percent.

Another major obstacle to Microsoft\'s 360-promotion effort is Sony\'s corporate brand name, which is still strong in Japan. Infoplant noted that many of the people surveyed picked the PS3 as their top choice simply because it was from Sony, or because it was the successor to the PS2.

Infoplant\'s research was conducted with a sample of 1,000 console owners that were equally split into four age groups; 250 gamers in their teens, 250 in their 20s, 250 in their 30s, and 250 in their 40s. The male-to-female ratio for each age group was 50-50.

How will Microsoft prove to be any type of competition to Sony if they have 0 market in Japan?

Boy these people are smart,  it\'s quite obvious to them as it is to me which Next Generation machine will give you the most bang for your buck.

Too bad alot of people over here in the west somehow fail to see that.

Anybody who ignores a console thats as generic as they come is pretty smart in my book.

I got to get this out of my system.  What;s up with the name and design?  I won\'t get into the "360" name,  but what\'s the theme for the design of the console?  It\'s basically a rectangle with only 2 memory card slots,  a power button,  and a disc tray.  Thats it folks.  It\'s a step above the PSone,  if that

After looking at the sales numbers again,  I\'m not surprised.  These people are smart enough to realize the PS2 and 3 have and will have 10x the amount of AAA games as the 360.

The Xbox\'s biggest game,  a PC shoot\'em up ported from the PC called Halo,  has no market in Japan.  = why the Xbox sells poorly in Japan.

I wonder what the numbers are in the West,  if they are similar,  then I repeal my comment on Eastern gamers being more savvy

People in the west don\'t know anything about the next gen systems.  Ask someone on the street and they\'ll say f*ck you gimme your wallet.

Pretty crazy figure in that poll.  Will the Xbox come out sooner and cost less in Japan as well as the US?

Like every generation I\'m rooting for both systems (nintendwho?) as history has shown the market can support the competition.  I\'m sure the PS3 will have the best games, but 360 is no slouch.

None of the percentages in that make any kind of sense for comparison\'s sake.

Apparently only 68% of Japanese gamers picked a next-gen system and among strategy, action and RPG games, 170% of Japanese gamers are looking forward to one of those the most.

No just you, we perfer over here in the west to have an open objective mind, which is why we own more than 1 console. America and Europe have no legence to SONY we buy what best suits our needs, rather then have them dictated to us by some 12 year old brat.

Oh yay. Another poll. A poll taken before launch games have been announced. We know this poll is so accurate.

Someone get back to me when launch games are announced and prices for both consoles. Then I\'ll pay attention to these polls, until then, it\'s just pointless. Espically when you take that the announcement of one major title can change the course of things ( > points to the "Ultra 64" losing FF7 and Sony\'s "PSX" getting it<).

Mr. Alliswell, as you have noticed recently has begun dramatically increasing his trolling habits here in the console debating, which I have to some extent take responsibility for, since my presence here has riled him up and driven him further to PR for SONY. His threads if you re-asses them Cleary are meant as counter attacks against the 360 news/discussions. What he fails to realize is  the reason why Most topics will be 360 related is because the system is coming out in 4 1/2 months from now, therefore it is only logical that more oncoming information is going to be accessible to the public for open discussion.

Funny thing is I enjoy his campaigning, he\'s sort of like the forum Jester, here to entertain us with is idiocy.

interesting.  I guess I am among the people that are interested in remake of the game.

Its understandable on how they get 80% want sequel and 30% want remake.  Its like among the 80% who like sequel also like a remake.  Hence, making it over 100% score.

But i didn\'t get the next one...umm..nevermind, i think i do now...70% gamer most looking forward is RPG, and among those also like strategy and action games...with 50% like strategy and 50% like action.

I guess its because they get to voted more than one genre of game...hence, may explain why it reach over 170%...
