Ageia\'s physics chip for PS3
« on: July 21, 2005, 12:28:34 PM »
Sony just announced plans that they are now including ageia\'s physics chip in the ps3.

Quote
San Jose (CA) - Ageia has pocketed a huge deal for its physics engine that promises to make video games more realistic. Sony will integrate the technology in its upcoming game console Playstation 3 (PS3) and help to push Ageia\'s technology quickly into the gaming market.

The fastest graphics processor may not be enough anymore to achieve the best graphics performance in next generation video games after all. At least Sony believes that it needs to push the envelope even further in its next Playstation 3 console that is expected to be available in May of 2006.

EDIT: It looks like it is only the SDK, so software only... at first I thought Sony was going to include the actual chip.

Hah cool news.  I debated posting that Ageia was making seperate cards whose soul purpose was physics, just like we have seperate cards for graphics and sound.  Now the PS3 gets it before PC gamers do!

Of course this raises more cost questions.

Well, no ; it\'s gonna be in PS3 software form, integrated into Cell\'s instruction set.

So devs won\'t have to bother with coming up with their own physics system and the trouble of integrating it efficiently into the code.

This means development cost/time reduction for PS3 devs. Sony has really learnt from their PS2 \'mistakes\'.

I hope we will see the same physics seen in the Sony conference demos in-game

The real time version of the Gundam demo in playable form looks very fake because there is no physics at all.(currently at 30fps and probably lower with pop up).The detail is almost the same though if not the same.

The demos looked impressive at the conferrence not much from the graphics but from the physics mostly

Well, that\'s great !  The more I read about PS3, the more I get excited!  Sony are truly making a beautiful machine !;)

It\'s an additional chip added to the system. Step your reading comprehension up.

both of you are wrong.. it\'s only the SDK Sony is including in the development system... software only...

nothing too exciting as MS has also purchsed the software rights for Xbox360 months ago.  That\'s Tom\'s Hardware article is very misleading...

Did you actually go to their official site? It shows a fuggin\' chip on the front page.

Quote
The PhysX chip is supported by a software development kit SDK from subsidiary Novodex and will enable game developers to capitalize on tomorrow’s multiprocessor PC’s and parallel architecture game consoles.

Game developers are already creating titles in anticipation of the PhysX chip, using AGEIA\'s NovodeX Physics SDK - the only middleware engine equipped for the future of hardware accelerated physics while meeting today\'s software requirements. NovodeX is also the only multi-threaded physics API that will unleash the power of multi-processor systems.

EvX, other sites I\'ve gone to say it\'s just the SDK.  No chip

And that purple thing is not how a chip looks like :p

yes they are making a chip to be made for a standalone add-in card for the PC, ASUS has already signed on to distribute it.. gonna cost $249-$299..

Why add this chip when the ps3 and xbox360 have multi-core processors able to handle this sort of thing with the right software.  This just lets developers have great physics without having to come up with a program, algorithm or whatever.
