You don\'t need a real car in Europe.  Just some small econobox that\'s easy on the diesel.

I live in the heart of the land of public transportation, I don\'t need a car.

The price is $2,500-ish. I\'m sure it\'d be cheaper in the US.

But  I\'m still working out the kinks... I don\'t want to go over $2,500.

why not get an SLi board just in case?

Sli, imho, as to be the worst thing that ever happened to computer. How would the console market react if Square-Enix anonced you need to hook 2 X PS2 to play the next FF series ??

Nvidia took the fast way to improve the gaming performance without releasing anything really new. the R&D department shine by their laziness. for %1 of the gaming comunity, another 399$ graphic card aint the end of the world, but for the rest of us, even a 399$ each 6 month is too much.

of corse you dont need to upgrade every ½ a year.. it totaly suck to play game like BFG or HL2 on a 9600pro (wich isnt 2 year old).

The overall price to keep up with the computer industries is at least 500$ per year, and its way worst if you wanna keep up with the computer gaming industrie.
can\'t see why not!

SLI was out years ago, the old monster 3d 2 cards supported it. I had 2 12meg cards running through sli.  It was great.

As long as people aren\'t forced into having to go sli for gaming. Then i personally don\'t care. If it does get to a point where we need to have 2 gfx cards in our machines to play games. Then i\'ll be pissed.

as much as you may dislike SLi, it\'s still been a boon for nvidia and hardcore gamers alike.  Don\'t forget ATi is (maybe) coming out with crossfire.. I say maybe because who knows what the hell is wrong with them lately, everything is getting pushed back.

I\'ll definately get an SLi board sometime next year when I upgrade.  Or I could get one sooner and pop another 6800GT (and re-use everything else) and get much better performance.

I\'m leaning on waiting till the 8 series GPU comes out though...

I haven\'t decided yet, I just thought it would end up being a Samsung. But now I\'ve seen a sweet 19" TFT from ViewSonic. It has a fast panel (8 ms) and great color rendition. But it\'s quite a bit more than the 17" models I had in mind.

I don\'t have the 6800GT, just a 6800le. But I\'ll also await the new ATI card and see if it\'s better than the 7800 GTX. Also, the 7800 GT might be an option to save some money (but I\'d have to save a bit of money doing that, I won\'t do it for $30 :)).

EDIT: Getting the X2 3800 might also be an option, as it has great overclocking potential and costs quite a bit less than the other X2 CPUs.

That would never be the case because you aren\'t being forced into buying SLi to play anything.  It only allows for higher resolution, AA and the like.  Great thing about the PC arena is that everything can be scaled to run great on old hardware and cranked up on brand spankin\' new hardware.

name a game that only runs on a SLi setup  (there aren\'t any ;) )

I know.. new generation of graphic card will always be better then previous one in Sli mode.

I hate the Sli technologie because it was lazy R&D. It was a simple fix to get more juice.. "look i can score XXXX with 3d2005!!!!11" Compangy (nvidia and other brand) will always rely on "sli" or their counterpart equiv when they have problem with technology advancement.

"doesnt matter if we take 3 more months to devlop the next generation, lets just SLi the previous one!"

The competition keeps them in check.

You can say the same thing about dual CPU setups, but they serve a purpose, for servers and users alike.

Like JBean said this is the PC industry where you aren\'t foced to do anything with all the options available to you.  If you have the bread to enjoy an SLI setup then go for it.

It does make sense to have two GPUs process and scan each alternating line though. :)

I\'m more curious about the downgrades you\'ll make in the process of building this computer. Let\'s face it, when we all star tto build a computer, we come up with these great spec\'s and then we realize how much it all will cost...Eventually, you start cuttin\' things and lowering the budget.

Yeah, that\'s what I\'m doing right now. :)

I want to keep it under $2,500.

EDIT: I\'m at an acceptable price now. But only if I discard 1 gig of memory. :crying: I\'d like 2 gigs, but I guess I can live with 1 gig for a while and upgrade later. Or I could buy some lesser RAM, but I want to stick with dual Crucial Ballistix PC3200 CL2 as it\'s a great overclocker at low timings.

I think we all do that. I know that I did the same thing. It is amazing how much that PC will morph from your original concept.
