Basically because the memory controller is built into AMD processors, and is an external chip for Intel. Not worth redesigning a processor just for DDR2, it will be supported with the next gen chips on Socket M2
Plus I remember reading the increased latency of DDR2 wreaks havoc with the.... well here it is...
AMD\'s integrated memory controller design is much more sensitive to latency, or delays in a signal\'s journey from one point on a chip to another, Crank said. The first DDR2 chips run at 400 MHz and 533 MHz, and that\'s not fast enough to overcome the increased latency associated with DDR2 memory, Crank said. Internal tests of AMD systems with 400-MHz and 533-MHz DDR2 chips actually ran slower than systems with 400-MHz DDR chips, he said.
By the time 667-MHz DDR2 chips roll around, AMD will be ready to embrace the new standard, Crank said. This should take place at some point in 2006.
I think we all do that. I know that I did the same thing. It is amazing how much that PC will morph from your original concept.
I was just messing around earlier and came up with a system similar to yours... 4200 X2, 7800GTX, 2 GB PC3200, 250GB SATA HD, SLi Mobo, PSU, Dual DVD/CD burners and it came to under $2,300. But i\'m getting things cost a little more on your side of the pond?
