Not considering those 3D trees and some slight HDR-ish effect this looks like it could be done on Xbox or Gamecube.

Also, I don\'t know why Sega\'s still clinging to that 90\'s CG visual kind of style, even for Sonic.

I know they gotta allocate processing power for the game being speedy, but it would be refreshing if Sonic would be set in a world with realistic textures and style.

These pics look way too 90\'s CG for next gen. :(

No. You know what would be refreshing, a sexy looking, 2D Sonic that was actually worth buying.

Sega has been shoveling dirt on this franchise for years unless you\'ve found some fun in the Game Boy games.

My opinion.

Yeah true in some extend. The old 2D sonic games were all about speed.

The  dodgy 3D control system reduced the speed element and corrupted the gameplay fluidity that the 2D versions were known for. Collision detection sucked a lot too.

They didnt give as much opportunities to enjoy the game\'s speed as before. Its Sonic for Gods sakes.

If they fix the control and camera issues I ll be sold though

It looks pretty good to me.  Not the most impressive I\'ve seen of next gen, like Gears of War, but nice.  I\'m less concerned with the visuals than I am with the gameplay though.  The Sonic Adventure games were better than average, but left a lot to be desired as far as what a Sonic game should be.

I do think there is potential for a really great 3D Sonic game because I\'ve seen it in bits and parts across Sonic Adventure and the sequel (I haven\'t played Sonic Heroes yet).  The first level of Sonic Adventure, the beach, is great, and who could forget the whale busting up the pier?  Then my favorite level of the series, Windy Valley.  A pure adrenaline rush that, imo, Sonic Team hasn\'t been able to top since, but they came pretty close with the forest level in Sonic Adventure 2.

The boss fights have definitely improved upon moving into 3D.  All the fights with Chaos in SA were alot fun, especially the very last battle as Gold Sonic.  I also remember the fight with Robotnik being among my favorite this gen.  It\'s really too bad that these great moments were broken up by platforming.  Platform jumping and attacking enemies has never been Sonic\'s strong suit, and should be avoided except in situations where they keep Sonic moving along.  I think there\'s a chance we could see a great 3D Sonic if the game is built with speed in mind, and they (Sonic Team) stick to it.

Oh, and I would love to see a next-gen 2D, or 2.5D, Sonic.

First up was the announcement that yes indeed, there is a next-generation Sonic game in the works. Billed as a "re-invention" of the classic franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog will make its debut on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime during 2006.

Presiding over the game\'s development will be none other than Yuji Naka, who, along with character designer Naoto Ohshima, created the original Sonic game for the Sega Genesis in 1991. According to Sega, Naka will "create the most intense sensation of speed ever experienced in videogames" with "an innovative combination of art, physics and game design."

"We are proud to re-create our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," said Naka. "With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15-years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The \'rebirth of Sonic\' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems."

Now I have more reason to be excited.

There was a video version of this, saying it was real time for x360. Not hard to believe, considering it doesn\'t look that great at all. Might as well call Gears of War CG.

The blur effect makes it look CG. And having all those enemies there doesn\'t look like a real moment of gameplay.

I\'d say the blur could be done real time, but I think the monsters is a cutscene. Real time or not. If it is gameplay, it\'s an indication to me that this game is not going back to its roots like it needs to. In fact, all the screenshots point to that, regardless of the press release.

Indeed, a 2.5D Sonic is exactly what I would prefer.

True in some extend. It does look real time and very much feasible.Even the ray tracing doesnt look that much sophisticated.Looks like the same technique used in Burnout3 than the ray tracing seen in CGI footage.
Slightly blurry textures too that lack normal mapping. If thats CGI then its very bad CGI.The intro in Sonic Heroes looks better than this

Btw: If you watch the footage recently presented at JAMMA of VF5 and AfterBurner better graphics than this can be achieved for the next Sonic game.

I d love to see some gameplay video though. If the game has the same feel of fluidity an dspeed of the old games with super smooth graphics in this quality It would be perfect

Everytime people see early builds of games they go.

All the graphics are not impressive. It\'s like showing someone a car when it first heads down the assembly line.
