What Giga means is that some people who come to this country expect the rest of us to bend to their cultural taboos. Such as not taking off their veil or borka when entering a secured building like a bank and such. Or like at school, when teachers hand out information for the students parents to read, some want it to be in a Spanish version coz they don\'t understand English.

I think it\'s amazing that we STILL haven\'t adopted english as our offical language... WTH is up with that?

Legally (atleast here in NJ) if there is something like 6 kids who don\'t speak English but share the same language, the school must provide the classes in their language. So if 6 Iranian kids came to my old high school, they have to have their classes in Arabic. Its bullshit really. I hope that law gets overturned. Not sure if its federal or state though.

Its gotta be state legislation, because its not like it here. State controls school laws

Well, we\'re having the same discussion here in the Netherlands.

The current Dutch government keep on stressing that Turkish & Maroccan immigrants should learn Dutch + immigration course. That\'s understandable when it comes to any immigrant.

But ! They really do single out those groups. There are also alot of immigrants from other countries in NL who fail to integrate just as worse ;

For example here at the Streamline Studios game company we have ppl from USA, Mexico, Germany, Sweden, UK etc. While they are all very well educated and intelligent, they totally fail to integrate. Their Dutch vocabulary is about 3 to 4 words on average while they live here already for years.

They\'re not illegally in NL, but the current right wing government (and various "groups") keeps to single out the Turkish and Maroccan immigrants, even if they\'re not illegally here.

I know, it\'s also a media \'thing\' and an ongoing society discussion. I\'m just saying that governments are very (wrong) selective to pick on which group of immigrants (usually from countries with Islamic backgrounds or of poverty)  they stress to learn Dutch and such. (hey, that rhymes  )

And the Govt. here in the U.S singles out the Mexicans and Cubans, but those are the groups that are the one\'s primarily coming in illegally. It\'s like saying 85% of white people do something illegal specifically, thats singalling them out yes, but 8 out of 10 are doing it. Its a catch 22.

The overarching discussion is within society ; does an existing society accept newcomers and on what terms, regardless of origin.

society chooses a political government ; that is why casting a vote is important.

The context is and should be the legal/illegal determination of any immigrant and if legal, how he/she should be integrated in Dutch society.

Imo alot of current Dutch politicians and some general opinions are forgetting the fact that we have quite some USA, UK, German, Swedish etc immigrants here who are even more reluctant to properly integrate than alot of intelligent legal Maroccan & Turkish immigrants.

Shame on them.

I\'ve never forced anybody to bend to my culture. It just happens. There is really nothing to know about American culture because I\'ve never *seen* "American culture" America doesn\'t have a "culture" America is known for the blend and mixes of different cultures, that is our culture.

That is Giga and Gman, unless you can tell me somethings about American culture that is specially an American thing.

American Culture = blending of European Culture, Thanksgiving, 4th of July, Veteran\'s Day, barbeque, Blues, Jazz, R&B, Rock-n-Roll, muscle cars...and then there are states and cities with their own unique culture like Maine, New Orleans, Miami,  New York City etc etc
