TWO former animal keepers who refused to bare their breasts to a female lowland gorilla have settled a lawsuit against the Gorilla Foundation.

Nancy Alperin and Kendra Keller claimed they were fired after they refused to expose their bosoms to 34-year-old Koko.

They had also reported sanitary problems at Koko\'s home in Woodside, a ritzy town south of San Francisco.

The pair claimed they were threatened that if they "did not indulge Koko\'s nipple fetish", their employment with the Gorilla Foundation would suffer, the lawsuit alleged.

Ms Alperin and Ms Keller claimed that Francine "Penny" Patterson, the gorilla\'s longtime caretaker and president of the Gorilla Foundation, had pressured them to expose their breasts as a way to bond.

"On one such occasion," the lawsuit said, "Patterson said, \'Koko, you see my nipples all the time. You are probably bored with my nipples. You need to see new nipples\'."

The plaintiffs never undressed, said their attorney, Stephen Sommers. The foundation has denied the allegations.

Lawyers for both sides refused to disclose terms of the settlement.

A second similar lawsuit filed by another employee is pending. Sandra Marchese claimed that she was misled about the nature of her job when hired by Ms Patterson.

Ms Marchese said she had left her teaching job to write a Koko-based curriculum for schools, but was put to work doing the janitor\'s job.

The Gorilla Foundation was founded in 1976 to promote the preservation and study of gorillas.

"The foundation is trying to put this behind them," said Todd Roberts, an attorney for the Woodside-based non-profit organisation. It is best known for its gorilla language project, teaching American sign language to Koko.

The foundation says Koko has a working vocabulary of 1000 words, and understands 2000 words in spoken English.

In 2004, Ms Alperin was employed at the foundation for three months as a research assistant, and Ms Keller worked for four months as a research associate.
