SED TV with 100,000:1 contrast ratio!
« on: January 11, 2006, 03:57:16 AM »
SED!!!

Canon and Toshiba shown prototype of SED HDTV with a contrast ratio of 10,000:1.  Toshiba 42" SED shown in CES is 720p.  And Toshiba promises that a 55" 1080p SED with 100,000:1 contrast ratio will be out by year\'s end.  Awesomely Amazing if it\'s true about contrast ratio, even if it\'s a fraction of it still outperform plasmas and LCD in term of contrast ratio.  Imagine the best of both world, thin design of plasma, but black level and contrast ratio of CRT quality...maybe better than CRT in the contrast ratio area...

I remember reading CRT have a lifespan of about 60,000 hours usage and that after 60,000 hours usage, the light ouput only drop of 10%, which is amazing.

So, I can imagine SED having the lifespan similiar of CRT.

Although i do agree that the cost will be very expensive.  I wouldn\'t be surprise if this 55" be selling for $20,000 when it first comes out.

But as with history and patterns have shown, as with time, cost of those new technology will drop.  Who knows, maybe in a few more years, you can see them costing as much as the 50" 1080p plasma that cost $8,000.

Ok, but on forums i see some ppl say they\'re holding off their 19" lcd purchase
(in the 300 to 500 usd price range) becuz they believe they can get a SED or Oled screen of the same size for about the same price in less than a year !

So... naive  :lmao:

When PS3 comes out, I\'m planning on getting an HD TV. I may just get a CRT TV since I am still a bit skeptical about LCD TVs.

Good luck...

I doubt they will be selling CRT sets by the end of the year.

If anything, they will fall off by then dramatically.

I doubt that and disagree with you there.  I can imagine CRTs will be still around for at least a couple more years before manufacturers decided to  phase them out...

CRT are still best sellers as they still dominate the market.  analog NTSC CRTs will phase out possibly by year\'s end, but HDTV CRTs will be staying for a while aiming at cosumers who want great and accurate picture quality at an affordable price but don\'t mind bulky backspace and small screen size.

Like say if your TV die out in your bedroom, replacing it with a 26" HDTV widescreen CRT is much better than spending more for flat panel LCD at similiar size that have crappier picture quality...

I find the flat screen CRT TVs to have a much better picture than LCD TVs. Don\'t get me wrong, they are getting better and better and soon will replace CRT TVs but not now.

I\'ve been preaching about this tech for months now and toshiba made a pretty strong showing at ces.  Every article I\'ve read is 100% positive.

Only minor minor tiny drawback is that it\'s not completely free of burn-in, which is a side effect of using phosphurs.  Though supposedly it\'s even less suscetpible to burn-in than plasma, and in this day and age its hard to get it on the latest sets anyway.  bring it on!

edit- Titan we\'re talking SED.  This is a whole different tech than LCD.  It uses the same method of igniting phosphurs as CRT but each pixel is controlled digitally, so you get the best of both worlds

DLP projection is the best techology out there, so why get a VRT TV when you can get a 1080p DLP rear projection HDTV that alreayd looks better then plasma or LCD.

Mine rocks

DLP have better contrast ratio than plasmas and LCD, but still far from the quality of CRT.  So far, DLP only use 1 chip, wait till they uses 3 chips that cost at a reasonable price to compete with other projection type.  If you want big screen size, DLP might be a good choice, otherwise small screen size from 38" and under, CRT is the way to go for best picture for now.

Well then tell Best Buy because they have like 2 of them on the floor now compared to a ton of LCD and DLP rear projections.

I\'m not talking about the sub 32" table tops.  I\'m talking real sets.
