It does seem like a pretty transparent change tho.  No real benefit for the consumer, but a savings for Microsoft.  So I suppose it\'s not big thing.

Uncommon? Unheard of.  The closest I can think of would be the expansion for the N64... and even that\'s not the same.  You introduce a new chip which enhances current games, makes (any) older games incompatible, and is a must-own for certain newer titles and you will kiss any brand loyalty you have left goodbye.  There\'s a reason the console cycles are up to 6-7 years, and that\'s cause consumers don\'t want to be replacing their stuff every year.
