PS3: HD cables not included
Gamers looking to get the best picture out of Sony\'s premium PlayStation 3 package will need to shell out extra for proper hookups.

The price of Sony\'s upcoming PlayStation 3 has been the subject of much debate. The system will come in $499 and $599 packages, the latter including a larger hard drive, built-in wireless network capabilities, and an HDMI port. However, according to Sony\'s own official PS3 Web site, the system won\'t come with the cables necessary to carry an HDMI signal, or any high-definition signal, for that matter.

According to the double-asterisked bit of small print on the page, "Video output in HD requires cables and an HD-compatible display, both sold separately. Copy-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard. HDMI cable not included. Additional equipment may be required to use the HDMI connector."

That can\'t be right...

I suppose I could understand the $500 one without hd cables, much like the core 360, but the $600 one should come with at least HD cables.

I honestly don\'t care about the HD cables. I\'m sure a good percentage of PS3 buyers WON\'T have an HDTV or TV that will support it. I sure as hell don\'t and won\'t for a long time. Better it comes with regular cables than me getting the HD cables and I have to buy regular cables in the end anyway.

This news came out three days ago.  It\'s not a big deal, with the ICP tag turned off, you get 720p goodness over component.  If you want to enjoy 1080p goodness, then you need the HDMI cable, and I doubt anyone out there who owns a 1080p tv will be worried about a small amount of money for a cable.

With that said, there seems to be enough negative spin of this going around the web that Sony might either include the cable with the premium version or put in some sort of discount/coupon for a cable.

Not to mention the 360\'s connector offers NO differences from the previous generation, yet MS won\'t let you use your Xbox 1 A/V accessories on their latest console.  If you have a Component PS2 cable you\'re fine with PS3.

Good points you made there.  I currently have a ps2 component a/v cables that is hooked up to my hdtv and I can use the same component video cables for my ps3.  And ps3\'s component video can output 1080p on games that support it.  I can use the component video cables as a an alternative until I can get HDMI.  So, its all good.

It disappointed me since WiFi and HDMI were the only things that made me decide against the $500 model (if I ever buy one).

But I learned you can get an HDMI cable for $10 or so online. It\'ll run $40+ from somewhere like Best Buy, though.

So it\'s no big deal, but it\'s a hidden cost I didn\'t expect.

PS3+extra controller+2 games+cable

$600+~$40+$120+$10 = $770 + tax

There\'s just no way of getting around that. With only 400,000 systems coming to the States, I wouldn\'t get set on owning it this year anyway, though.

They\'re talking more about 1-1.2 million coming to NA this year, and 1-1.2 going to Asia.  They still hope to hit 6 million worldwide by next March, but we\'ll see.  In any event, if you can get one for launch, do so, cause you will be able to flip them for a tidy profit.

i didn\'t plan on getting one at launch either,..maybe the 2nd or third batch,..or maybe even if there\'s a price drop,...but i doubt i\'ll wait that long tho, if there\'s some decent games out by the third batch at least, i know i\'ll definitely cop one then...

Although the price and release date of the Wii console and controller is not likely to be revealed until worldwide press events on September 14th and 15th, the GameStop website lists a number of peripherals for release on November 1st. Included on the site, as spotted by consumer website GameSpot, is a Wii “Controller Glove” for $9.99, a “HD Premium Component Cable” for $59.99 and a “S-Video Premium AV Cable” for $39.99.

$59.99 for Wii HD Premium Component Cable?  What a ripoff that is.  More ripoff than XBOX360 $39.99 component cable...

It\'s made by Mad Catz. What do you expect.

I just hope it\'s not proprietary. Slim chance, eh?

I want component in the box.

By the way, the Nov. 1 bit might just be a placeholder date. Like Nov. 15, Nov. 30 or possibly Nov. 00 or Nov. XX

eh, I bought my component video cables that can connect either ps2 or xbox made by Mad Catz for only 9.99 before tax last November.

Quite surprise to see this one cost $59.99 for the wii componet video cables.  Since it mentions 3 3rd party brands for the accessories, I am not sure if this one is made from Mad Catz...either way, it sure is expensive and uneccessary...
